Hi all!
I'm in the planning phase of getting a 36Lx12Wx18H, 30 gallon reef tank set up. I know that's not an ideal "first tank" size, but it's free so it's what I'm going with for now. So please no bully.
Lots of good technical information easily findable, so I've got a good enough grasp of the mechanics of maintaining a tank to get started. The livestock part seems trickier to pin down.
Is there a good database or searchable list of common marine fish? Hoping something exists where I could search or filter by minimum tank size, aggression, feeding behavior, that kind of thing, to help with planning the stock list. I don't know enough about what is readily available to have my heart set on any particular fish. I mean, sharks would be cool, but pretty sure that's not feasible.
Alternatively, is there a "standard" list or lists recommended for that size tank? From what I've found so far, a pair of clowns is pretty universally recommended as the first fish to add regardless of tank size. Which, really, if I can keep them alive and happy for a few months, I can figure out what to add later, but I'm trying to get an idea of what expectations should be for a complete population in a tank this size.
Long term I'd like to get to a point where I can keep a few of the "easier" SPS corals after I've had some success with softies and LPS. So reef safe picks are best. I figure that will be a ways down the road though.
If anyone knows of any good YT channels that follow the progression of this size tank that would also be appreciated. Understandably it seems most channels I've found are focused on bigger, more visually impressive tanks.
