So my tank has been running for 6 weeks now and it's a 45 jbj gallon all in one and I put in a power head and the next day half of my fish were dying they looked like they were struggling to breathe so I put a air stone in and it didn't do anything those fish died. I went to the pet store for them to test my water just to see if it was my water and the water was completely fine. The whole tank was doing great intil I put in the power head and I'm still puzzled on why this happened.

The two things that I can think of are stray voltage from a faulty power head or the added flow kicked up something that was toxic. Do you have any algae issues?

More is needed:
1) When you say the tank has been running for 6 weeks, does that include cycling period or after?

2) Total livestock in the tank? And what type of fish are dying?

3) How long do you have the fish before it dies?

4) what type of test kits is the LFS using?

It could be stray voltage or it could be something else. It is hard to tell unless more information is provided. Depending on the test kits the LFS is using they could be inaccurate. There are still LFS's that recommend hydrometers to test your water, yet they are inaccurate.

If the tank is young I highly doubt you will get toxins from kicking up the sand.

Including cycling I added in 42 lbs of live rock with 3 damsels and 2 pepper mint shrimp for aptasia problems and 500 copepods and had that running for 4 weeks and then after that I added a fox face rabbit fish and a Clown and a rose bubble tip and a mandarin goby and they were all doing amazing for 2 weeks but then I put a dwarf flaming angel in the same night when I put in the power head and the next day I woke up and the angel the foxface and one of the damsels were breathing really fast and they eventually died so that day I did a 20% water change and I'm not sure what they use he took a strip and put it in my sample of water and told me my water is perfect

Stop buying fish and buy some quality test kits....NEVER trust the crappy kits the fish store uses, usually being used by people who dont really care. Success in this hobby is about time and patients. IMO, 6 weeks is not enough time to stabilize a system enough to add that many fish, that quickly. Stabilize your system, then add a fish. Keep it alive for 6 months. Then add more. Some will disagree with me but slow and steady wins the race.

Wow ok. I would not trust those strips. That is a heavy bioload for a new 45. I would say too many fish too fast.

should wait at least six months for a rta and a year for a mandarin. don't trust your lfs. ask here before you buy.
