Hi Everyone ;Happy

Im thinking about doing my own "homemade" fish food. There are so many recipes online and I can't really decide which one is good. Currently we only have two clownfish and a brown scopa tang. The tang doesn't touch the nori we put in there and I know how important this is for tangs. so I want to mix my own fish food with nori in it. Any suggestions or recipes? Thanks in advance

I really don't think you can go wrong in mixing up a bunch of fish products from your local fish monger or oriental store. A couple tips.... Chop, slice and dice when the fish/mollusk products are frozen. Much easier to handle and slice and dice into small bits. I've tried those mini ice trays and don't like them....too small. Once you get your concoction mixed into a gooey mess, put it into zip loc bags....about a 1/4 inch thick and freeze. Once frozen, cut into whatever size cubes you'd like to feed your fish. One more thing....you're going to stink up the place, so be prepared.

All that said, here are two DIY's I do:

I dont keep tangs, to agressive for my tastes. Use a variety of ingredients, shrimp, clam, scallops, squid, fish eggs some garlic and vitamin supplements. Try some cooked broccoli or spinach or use spirulina powder in the mix.

My recipe
24 clams 14$
Oysters 1/2 pt 9.99
Flounder 4.98 used half
Shrimp 5$ used half
Nori 2.99 forgot to use it :(
Fish egg 6.95 used 1/6 30 cube used 5 cubes
I also now add freeze dried plankton
One note I'll make is that I used cookie sheet with plastic wrap. It was hard to get the wrap off. I suggest wax paper on cookie sheet.

Hi Daniella19, yes you think all tangs would eat nori sheets, each fish is an individual and has his likes and dislikes. What I do to encourage any fish that are herbivores that eat algae is to spread garlic and sometimes ginger paste on the nori sheets, they seem to love it. The garlic helps with the fish immune system while ginger apparently is supposed to keep any parasites like ick away. Now there will be plenty of people who would think differently that ginger does not work , but I have not had ick so far in 3 years of being in the hobby, I did notice a few white spots on my blue hippo tang in the beginning but searching around for some advise, I came upon a YouTube video, that someone had tried ginger and had quick results, so did I.
I don’t always use ginger every time I feed a nori sheet I just do it once a month the fish love it and the corals have no I’ll affect. Try Algae flakes or pellets as well. Has for other foods tangs also like Mysis and brine shrimp you can also add a little garlic too the mix. Buying a selection of mussels, prawns, white bait from your local market fish store is a good idea. I mince it up and put them in RO water in a ice cube holder in the freezer until I want them and I know that there won’t be other substances or contaminants in the mix, but fresh food. Has for recipes you just have to experiment a bit and make sure that your fish get the nutrients they need.
Hope this helped a bit.

Thanks everyone for the response. I feed them currently flakes and pallets and brine shrimp and I have fish vitamins which I add daily to the food. I think they don’t get all the nutrients they need. The clownfish really look good and they are growing fast but I think the tang has HLLE and i think it’s not getting better :-( that’s why I want to mix my own food so they get what they need.
