By chance, it has come to be that I might study and work with Haccetepe Medical School in Turkey for the next 6 years. As I am not willing to give this hobby up, and there's no way I'm going to become a blenny collector (there are a LOT of species there), I was wondering if anybody had any ideas for species I could keep? I am planning to collect or pay people to collect fish for me here, and it appears there are no real legal limitations to doing so (though I will avoid endangered or threatened species).

And does anybody know from where I might be able to purchase supplies? I do intend to be keeping a very large 600-1000 gallon aquarium here, but it's seeming like it's going to be tough to stock it. Previously I was going to get critters like catsharks, bamboo sharks, and a short tail nurse shark, which are all available in the USA.

Any ideas guys?

The Mediterranean Sea is temperate, but still relatively cool. You may want to check on a European fishkeepers' forum as Europeans would be the most likely to collect Mediterranean species. If available, resources from the Monaco Aquarium could be quite helpful.:)

It doesn't seem like the Monaco aquarium has any provisions, but I will see if I can't contact them and get some help. Hope they speak English because I sure don't speak French!

Hmm, I don't know of any European fishkeepers forums, but I'll look around. Chillers are going to be a pain :/
But not much I can do about that.

I didn't even mention the Black Sea as its temperature ranges from 31 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. That's a mega chiller!
Of course you'll only be about 1300 miles from the Red Sea and that opens up endless possibilities...

Huh, I never considered the red sea! Though it's a bit far, I wouldn't consider it impossible to work around. The benefit of the mediterranean is that I could tell fishermen and divers to look out for a certain fish, and give me a call if they do get it, and I'll pay them for it (much cheaper than market price).

The mediterranean even has corals, though not nearly as many as tropical waters.

I'll look into the options from the red sea.

Update: I tried posting in a Turkish aquarium related forum; the only one I could find. I missed a single "a" in the entire post and that ended up heing what everyone focused on. With a few people bashing me for it, and some others arguing with them.

Guess I'll try to find some European forums, though I really don't know how to go about finding them.
