LPS said Carpenter's Wrasse, but it's not as striking as the pics I see. Did I end up with a female or is it a different species?? It is redish-orange with a white belly & thin, bright purple stripes. (Sorry the pics are a bit blurry. He was a bit camera shy.)

Blurry and shadowed images but my guess is that you got a female carpenters wrasse or the fish is still a juvenile

in the wild all wrasses try and go to a 'dominant' male status, it's only their hierarchy that dictates what happens...usually in closed systems they all go male at some point...I know I'm not helping. Sorry!

With the pronounced delineation between the red and white, it could also be a ruby fairy wrasse. If you can take a look with the dorsal fin up you should be able to tell between the two, but I don't think the tail is a match for the fairy wrasse and I haven't seen the blue striping extending onto the white part with any of them.

It is definitely a male flasher wrasse, but the number of dorsal filaments will determine if it's a Carpenter's. If it has multiple dorsal filaments it's a Carpenter's; if it has only a single dorsal filament it's a McCosker's.

It's a MALE flasher for sure. Can't see the # of rays to say which kind. Could be carpenters or McCosker for excample.

As far as it not looking as colorful... well you just got it so it is probably stressed but also they are called flasher wrasses because they become colorful/vivid when excited and flashing. Otherwise their colors are more muted.
