A mate caught this while fishing a few weeks ago. It looks really cool and I would like to do some research into it and maybe end up keeping some. Its about 6 inches long and it was caught in 8 meter deep water on a sandy substrate during the winter months here in Aus. Could anyone give me an ID? I believe it to be some kind of lizardfish, but I've been given a few different IDs from other sources from a very large blenny to a gurnard who's been recently attacked so it's long flowing fins have been eaten.

Thanks! Goby/blenny was one ID I've already been given :)
I can't really tell if there's is a foot or not, it doesn't look like it to me. This is the only photo I have to go on sadly. If it is a goby or blenny he's been eating VERY well.
From my experience, everything looks to point towards lizard fish except they usually have a more pointed nose. It's got a nasty set of teeth on him!

Definitely a species of lizardfish, Trachinocephalus myops.

I'm also on the lizardfish boat. We catch similar species here in the back waters of the Texas gulf

Thanks everyone. Trachinocephalus myops seems to be a perfect match!

He's a scary looking little fella!
I think I may turn my 24 into a species tank for one eventually. Cue the dramatic music!

Sounds good to me :)
I want to start up a couple and run it all from one big sump! I want sea horses and pipe fish
