Saw two interesting fish today at cal academy of sciences that I've never run across before. Is anyone able to ID? Sorry, the pics on the second fish are small. Note that those clams are huge, probably 15"+.

I agree that the second is a sweet lips. The first one is Sacura speciosa, a newly discovered deepwater fish.

Yes, that's the correct ID, but I wouldn't consider it newly discovered by any means (officially described in 1979). They're super deep and in areas where collection does not typically occur.

That particular specimen came to be in that aquarium simply because Matt Wandell works with Luiz Rocha and knows Brian Greene. ;)

Hunter, do u know where I can find more info on the sacura speciosa? A google check revealed nothing.

Or were you looking for more than that? As for keeping them, you'd have to speak with Steinhart or Koji Wada; sales of them over the years have been pretty limited to the insane Japanese market.

Haha thank you for the info, although I'm not too familiar with the names!
I should know better than to post at 6 am, can't even pay attention to dates  :D

Zoacollector had one for sale in Aug. It was $650 if I remember correctly.

Being a deep water fish it would do best in cooler waters and subdued lighting.
