Has anyone here ever kept fish the the refuguim area? I have a 150 gallon sump with a 60 gallon section the functions as a refuguim. It’s such a large area and all it has in it is rock sand and a couple macros. Thinking dang there is a lot of gallons there I could put a snow flake eel or something in.

I know a lot of folks will use the refugium as a time-out spot for delinquent fish and critters until they can find a better solution for them, but I don't think I've heard of anyone keeping a fish there long-term. The snowflake would also probably escape and either end up where you don't want it, or worse.

Depends on your goal for the refugium. In the old days a refugium was any space in your system where an animal or plant could be isolated from the 'mob'. It's really only in the last 10 years that refugium has become synonymous with chaeto/macro. I have four of them on my system: chaeto, cryptic, frag and coral/fish. The latter is for anything that is getting unduly picked on in the main display. It is a long-term home for a few fish (mostly my black tang which is a total wimp).

I now know someone keeping a fish long-term in a refugium! :)

There's always one .... Plus I've been doing this for far longer than most so very few things I haven't tried (even if a lot of them failed).

So ur saying you have 4 fuges (or 1 fuge divided by 4)? How big is each section? How big is the dt?

I’m curious, because I’m considering both a cryptic and algae fuge.

I have a clown fish and two shrimp in my sump....not to mention a bunch of corals! :D The refugium portion is no longer used as a refugium and more as a coral dump and for the clown and shrimp. Afraid to put the shrimp in the DT because of my wrasse. I actually have an open panel in my stand to display my sump.

It’s a 60 gallon area and I don’t really want to pack it with rock. I do have a couple different macros. But I just really think I should put a fish or 2 in that are not reef safe just for fun. Next problem maybe that I run that light right now 24/7. Do you think that it would mess with the fish? It is a SB reef light fuge light.

My system is big. Display is a 450. The 'typical' chaeto refugium is a compartment in my sump of approximately 50 gallons. Cryptic Fuge is a separate 30 gallon tank, as are the fish and frag tanks. The fish/coral fuge is a separate 120XH and the frag Fuge is a 60 shallow.

System wise my sump is 150 as you can see broke into a couple area’s. My display is only 75 gallons. I have ordered a couple frag tanks that I plan on hooking up and maybe another 180 to 240 gallon display sometime in the future. My display has been up 12 years though it to is going through kinda of a restarting phase. I sold everything out of it a couple years ago. Bought new rock and got busy. Just finally got back into stocking it a couple months ago.
