My clownfish just jumped out of the aquarium and took about a 4 foot fall. I got him back in immediately and seems to be swimming fine but may be opening his mouth a little bit to make it look like hes breathing harder. Anyone have any thoughts about this

hi, give him a little while, hope he calms,if not, come back here ,with pics, short video.best wishes.

Jumped Fish Rescue

My little son had a favorite fish which we found on the floor. He was totally dried out like a board.
It was my son, Brian's, first experience with death. I explained to him about fish heaven but Brian was still was irreconcilable.
I told my son that very rarely a fish comes back to life when he gets into the tank. When returned to the aquarium our little jumper just floated on his side, apparently due to his extreme dryness.
Brian's wailing continued.
In total desperation, I grabbed the very dead fish, submerged him, and started moving him back and forth in the water to help get him wet and push water onto his gills.
In a few minutes, we saw that fish twitch and 20 minutes later he was swimming around!!!
Now it was necessary to explain to my child that not everything that dies will come back to life.
Whew!!!

I thought I was the only one who experienced something seemingly impossible as this. For me, it was an african cichlid of some sort. I remember finding it pretty dried out. I put it in the tank, saw it move just a little after I moved it in the water, and left for school. That evening it was fine. I was about 14 years old and I am 100% sure my dad didn't replace it.

This prompted me to google, this is all I found:

I wonder how long my fish had been out, I have no way to know. It DEFINITELY looked dead and dried out big time/stiff.

Good article,as me myself before reading this thread and article you shared,I would of thought a dried up fish that jumped out tank was surely dead and disposed of it bit know if ever happens will try getting gentle flow through its gills to try revive ^_^

I'll bet he'll make it..

Sort of reviving this thread but I’m also surprised how resilient fish can be.

I just had a flame angel jump out because a coral beauty was harassing it. Must’ve been out for at least 30 minutes. It wasn’t potato chip dry when I found it but definitely stiff and rubbery. I thought I saw a gill barely move so I tossed it in my 40 gallon breeder.

A few gasps turned into rapid breathing turned into its upright. It’s still breathing heavily and acting skittish but the fact it made it back this far is astounding.

Makes me wonder how many carpet surfers I should’ve thrown back just to see.

I hope the flame makes it. It’s inspiring to see.

My flame hawk did the same yesterday. Lucky my son saw it and told me. I got him back in and held him in flow to get water over his gills for a while.
He's fine today.
Get a netted lid. I bought one but was still in the process of moving tanks and hadn't made it yet. After that I stopped everything for the day to make a 4ft netted top.
