I have a 45 gallon bow-front tank that has been set up for 3 months now. Currently I am wanting a FOWLR, with the idea that I will add corals at about a year or so.... Or maybe just start a new tank for corals.... Right now I'm trying to figure out my fish list. I currently have two clownfish and an ornate leopard wrasse. What other fish could I put into my tank? Is there a list somewhere? I get so discouraged looking at photos of fish and then seeing that they are aggressive, or need a bigger tank than what I have. I'm hoping to come up with a list and then narrow down our choices from there.

I’m almost at the same point as you, but in my case it’s my DT. I also already have a few fish. As to your question: My advice?

research research research.
check out sites like LiveAquaria, saltwater fish.com, the aquatic Arsenal etc. look for fish that catch your eye and research each one. Compare notes from each site. Look into the info available here. look at YouTube. There’s a lot of good information there.

it’s daunting I know, but to me at least, the research is part of the fun

How's that leopard wrasse doing? Remember from an earlier post.

It can be frustrating seeing fish you want but turn out not to be suitable for other inhabitants or tank you have. Unfortunately, our choices, desires and budgets limit our selections if we are responsible fish keepers.

The guides on those sites are accurate for the species and I use those religiously for my fish selection. You will hear a lot of folks say "I had a hawk fish that didn't touch my shrimp" which is true - individual fish can exhibit inconsistent behaviors from species - but it's a bad bet. Go with the species characteristics on size, temperament and reef compatibility and you'll be fine, if somewhat disappointed in selection.

The fish you don't select that aren't appropriate will thank you for it.

Good luck!

Generally go for fish that are easy, reef safe and peaceful. certain venders rate fish like live aquaria and blue zoo aquatics. You want fish with shapes And lifestyles that other fish don’t have in your tank. You might consider a bengai cardinal, a fire fish, a goby or a blenny.

The ornate leopard wrasse is doing great. He’s eating frozen brine shrimp really well. I bought some frozen mysis to start using tonight. The yellow corris wrasse died after 9 days in the QT. Not sure why. He was also eating well.
Finding the right fish is difficult!! And going to the lfs l
