After have a dramatic tank crash in 2017, I have recently restarted my reef tank, starting from dry rock which I cured. This process began as far back as Nov. 2017, with sand going into the tank in Dec 2017 rock going into the tank March 2018 after curing for about 3 months, then introducing fish July 21st after seeing no ammonia and nitrates begin to build - a clown and 2 bangled cardinal fish. I also added 3 snails and two hermit crabs. At this point in time, I was only running the protein skimmer and GFO reactor (no filter materials or activated carbon). Also, diatoms were lightly covering rocks and the sandbed. One of the bangled cardinal fish died the same week, the second cardinal and two snails died the week following, the clown then died the third week. I thought the tank may not have cycled or was going thru spikes, but never registered ammonia or nitrates in any of my tests. We introduced a new fish, a talbots damsel. At the same time I put a Seachem Ammonia alert into the main tank, filter sock and floss, and activated carbon. I also added Seachem Prime and Stability at the time of adding the fish. The fish almost immediately began to show redness in the gills. The fish is still alive after 2 weeks, but I am concerned to add anything else and the gills still appear red. Also to note, red cynobacteria did appear the week we introduced the damsel. I have done weekly 10% water changes to keep the cyno in check. The cyno seems to be subsiding and I am starting to see numerous coralline algae dots on the lower rocks and shaded regions. I will likely be changing out the GFO to reduce phosphates further which likely take care of the cyno. I am struggling with CO2 dropping my pH to very low levels. I have started running a CO2 scrubber, but the improvement may short lived at about 9 days with the pH dropping to 7.6 yesterday (pH range without scrubber 7.6-7.8, with scrubber 7.8-8.1).

Calcium - Ranging between 380 and 425 ppm; currently 425 ppm
Alkalinity - Ranging between 7.0 and 9 dKH; currently 7.5 but just dosed Seachem Fusion 2 to raise it to 9 dKH
Magnesium - Ranging between 1185 to 1350 ppm; currently 1350 ppm
Phosphate - Ranging between .1 to .15 ppm; currently .15 ppm
Silicates - 0 ppm
Salinity - Ranging 1.025-1.026; currently 1.025
Temp. - 78-80F currently 78.7F
pH - 7.6 - 8.11; currently 7.89
My greatest concern at the moment continues to be with the redness of the gills. I have been trying to figure this out, even checking for stray voltage which I am not seeing anything on my voltage meter. The lfs seems to think it is a parasite that is persisting in the tank from the previous fish. I do not want to medicate the tank and disrupt the coralline growth and I do not want to lose the fish either. The two crabs are still living, but not active and appear to be shedding. The remaining snail dropped from the glass about the same time my pH suddenly dropped to 7.6. Currently stumped on the fish and pH swings. Would love some suggestions.
