I had a Royal Gramma jump out today.i was in the room and heard a splash, but of course didn't look then about 5 to 10 minutes later i found it on the floor. How long can they survive out of water?

Was it still gasping, did you put back
I did put it back in the DT for a short time he went to the bottom and hid.So i netted him a put him into the QT tank and see what happens.Right now he hiding in a powerhead that is turned off.

I've heard of eels surviving 8-12+ hours out of water, but never a fish more than a few minutes.

Longer than most people think. As long as the gills tissue is wet they can still take oxygen in (also from air, altough more difficult than water). I guess 15 minutes or something.
When things started to dry it's over.

Check on it this morning still alive and swimming around a little.I will feed this afternoon and see it responds to food.If he eats i will put him in the display tonight.
