I'm considering one hole drilled beside my overflow for water return from sump and or drilling 2 holes for a closed loop. I'll likely end up using loc lines from above to return but I'm curious about the following...

Don't people have issues with fish/snails getting sucked into the intake hole of closed loop? Do people use plastic screens/strainers to prevent this?

If I were to return water vial a hole beside overflow then when I turn off my pumps, before the water level drops, something could move into that pipe so do folks use plastic mesh/screens there as well?

Basically what are the different approaches to keeping life out of those pipes?

I had a closed loop on my 125G Reef flo dart pump. I used a duriso stand pipe screen. Shrimp would clean the screen
90 degreee elbow so it would sit flat with the side of tank

I used the Aqueon overflow kit with a screen similar to that, haven’t had an issue of something getting in for all the years I’ve been running it.
