Hello all,

I have been noticing a trend in price variance of same species fish based on where they came from. For instance a sailfin Tang from Sri Lanka tends to be slightly cheaper than one from Kenya. Why is this? My assumption is that obviously their is a supply difference, but why does demand of that certain location drive price? Is it a purity thing? Like people only wanting fish from Sri Lanka or a pure Sri Lankan reef? Just seemed odd with no real explanation on Google. Anyway, thanks for reading. =)

I have no idea, but I been around long enough to know that everything comes down to money. I imagine its something like "how much does the source cost plus cost of transportation minus taxes and government regulations"

Ya know. That never crossed my mind. Lol I just kept thinking like why would someone pay more here when one wheel click down they have it for less.

Fish in some locations might be caught using cyanide or other harmful methods, or kept in suboptimal conditions, so that’s why some people would prefer to buy fish from trusted sources.

Ah that makes sense too. I should also clarify that these prices are from the exact same LFS and websites.

On a root level it's us, the consumer, that drives pricing. For whatever reason it becomes popular to have a certain fish or region specific species. It could be warranted or just popularity....we humans love to create crazy systems!!

Absolutely, and i think in this case the source is the country of origin. I believe Sri Lanka is less sketchy than indonesia or the phililipines in terms of collection practices but kenya, red sea, fiji, marshall islands, christmass island are alll great sources
