I started my tank on 9/1/21 and just recently lost almost all of my fish due to a disease that spread like wild-fire throughout my tank.

I believe the disease came in on a powder brown tang and then spread to all my other fish. At the time I did not have a QT tank setup when adding new fish.
I first noticed little white dots on the powder brown (marine ich?) Then I noticed these little clear/white looking oval things on my yellow tang. (flukes?)

Two fish have survived so far, just 2 chromis...

I lost the following fish:
2 tank bred clowns
1 tank bred yellow tang
1 powder brown tang
1 orchid dottyback
2 bangaii cardinals
1 chromis
1 coral beauty angelfish

Should I remove the 2 chromis and let the tank be fallow for a while? If so, how long?
What size qt tank should I set up? 20gal long or 40 breeder?
How long should I wait before adding more fish?

I have corals in the tank so I cannot medicate the main display.

I have never had a disease wipe out my entire tank before. This is a first in the hobby for me and Ive been in the hobby for 25 years now.

I would remove the chromis and treat in a QT with PraziPro then copper. 20gallon is big enough for those two fish but keep an eye on ammonia, I always use the Seachem ammonia alert badge.
Look at the Humblefish link for detailed information.

Good luck!

@Jay Hemdal has had success with a 45-day fallow period, but you might want to stretch it to 72 (76) days in this case just for peace of mind.

Many of us have been where you are. Don't be disheartened! I'd take the opportunity to add some cool inverts or macro so that they can go through the fallow period in their own form of quarantine.

The 45 day period is only valid at > 81 F., and some invertebrates won't tolerate that. Longer is always safer, especially in a tank that has had a wipeout (more tomonts in the substrate).

I’ll try to set up a qt tank in the garage or at work next week…. I think my students would like to see some fish even if it it’s just a qt tank.

I don’t mind running fallow for a few months my copepod population is so high right now they are literally dying from old age. I can literally see them out on the rocks and in sand during the day and they are HUGE!

Should I throw in a sponge filter from my hob filter in my main tank to seed for the qt?

how long is long enough to seed a sponge or small bio media????

I feel your pain man. I had a velvet outbreak and my first one in over 20yrs and wiped out my tank all for 2 fish. Had to tear into my reef, get them out, and redo the tank. Long tiresome and stressful process. Treated them in a QT w Copper used Hanna tests and let my tank go fallow to break the cycle. After that all fish were through TSM. Quarantined professionally.
