Fish Selection (Red Sea Reefer Nano)

May I just add, I’ve got a nano tank which here in uk we use litre as measurements so it’s 54L or 14g. After displacement it’s only 40L or 10.5g, and I’ve got LPS corals, 3 various clams, and currently a clownfish, a pipefish & pink-streaked Wrasse. I plan to add minimum 1 more fish and at max 2 more. Currently I’m getting undetectable NitrAtes, which is also as I’m feeding sparingly. I’ve also got snails and a fire shrimp if that helps.

@hotashes makes a great point. Thank you!

I think I'm going to go with a pair of clown fish as it will fit well with my expansion project.

Now, huge question... Anyone know of a good place to get healthy, happy clown fish?

Feel free to pop by my tank log, I would help suggest LFS but being here in uk makes it difficult ha ha

@theKoolAidMan Great point thank you!

I am going to think about the current situation, as well as the inevitable expansion and go with a few clown fish. I do love those little guys.

LFS is usually the best option. Check around your area. Clowns are easy to breed and if you have a really good LFS in your area one might even have a few breeding pairs so they raise their own. The LFS I go to here in Buffalo, NY has like 10+ breeding pairs and just pumps out babies. Pretty cool that it's all done in house, so no shipping, no big fish warehouses, etc.

Percula and Ocellaris clowns are absurdly common so just about any LFS will usually have some in stock. With that in mind, BE PICKY. Don't just take the first ones you see. There are all sorts of cool color patterns available now thanks to selective breeding. Also, if you're going for a pair, you'll want to find two that are either already paired as adults, OR two juveniles that are not sexually mature yet. Adding two fully grown sexually mature adults may and up seeing one kill the other. A good LFS will be able to point out the juveniles they have as opposed to adults.

If all that fails, one of the big online shops like Liveaquaria.com seem to get pretty good reviews, however a GOOD LFS will also be willing to order whatever you want with their next fish shipment, so you would save a lot on shipping and would have the ability to see them in the LFS before you buy them to make sure they're what you want. I tell my LFS what I want and he orders them with my biweekly fish order at no extra cost to me. After he gets them in I go take a look. If they're what I want he holds them for me for 3 days to make sure they rebound from the stress of shipping and appear disease free and then I go buy them.
