Good afternoon,

I noticed some discoloration on my new fish’s skin, does anyone know what this might be?

Is it just on the fish's left side? If so, it is probably just a skin scrape.

However, you said its a new fish - have you treated it with anything yet? How long have you had it? Does it show any other symptoms? (not eating, breathing fast, etc.)

Looks like a scratch or scrape from getting startled and should heal on its own. I don't see an injury where its likely to become infected but should it start to look bad or raw, seachem Kanaplex or Maracyn 2 in quarantine would be your treatments.

The marking looks like a perfect circle. I've had something like that appear on two of my tangs within the past year. On mine, the mark almost looked like a branding. I believe each fish may have been briefly sucked into a pulsing wave pump when it reversed flow. The front housing of the pump has a circle where the impeller shaft is attached. Neither fish was permanently injured fortunately. The mark disappear within several hours.

I second this, and bristletooth tangs a aggressive and somewhat spastic swimmers ofen getting little nicks and scrapes, and the perfect circularity makes me think equipment of some kind too

In addition to the rest - whom with I totally agree - It can also be a bite from a bigger fish - either way - watch it.
