Fish Stocking List!

Hey guys,
Okay so I'm getting together a fish list! I'm hoping everyone says it's great! But if not I'd like to know so I don't hurt an innocent fish! So the tank is a 40 gal Fowlr and it's not through its cycle yet so I won't be purchasing fish for about a month. My girlfriend and I have a chart going and are monitoring the parameters religiously! Here are my fish hopefuls in order on how we plan to add them.

1 firefish
2 bangaii cardinals
1 royal gramma basslet
1 green clown goby
1 bicolor blenny
1 long nose hawkfish
1 valentini puffer


We are gonna put in a CUC at about week 3, and I know the puffer may want to eat some but I'm hoping it may at least leave some shrimp and hopefully the hermit crabs.

So here are the issues I see....if it is a fowlr....clown gobies do not do well without their sps hosts....they my live, but do not thrive...

same theory with firefish....they seem to do better in schools....I assume it is a power in numbers thing.

The only other thing is realize that the puffer will eat most of your cuc as it gets bigger.

I would have second thoughts on the Long nose hawk as well, getting to big and needs a lot of room to swim.
Start looking into wrasses also.

Admittedly most of my research has been on live aquaria, on that site it says that the LN hawkfish should be in at least a 30 so I figured I'd be fine with a 40. If this is wrong that's fine my goal is definitely to be fair to the fish.

Also it says firefish are aggressive to their own species and should only be kept singly or in a mated pair. I do see a point in the green goby and will rethink that one.

A LNH can be as large as 5".
If you start out with a small LNH you should be fine but after a year or two ready for a upgrade or find another home for him.

If you introduce the firefish all at the same time you should be fine with 3 or 5 of them.
They are schooling fish as you know.

Thats fair, we have a lfs that I'm sure could re home if needed. As far as length per sq gallon do you think I would be okay with 3 firefish?

Thanks so much for your input! Another question, once my tank has cycled and I have a CUC in is it gonna be okay as far as bioload to add those fire fish first? because I assume they need to be added at the same time.

Firefish are not social in aquaria! Do not add more than one firefish unless they are purchased as a bonded pr, and under no circumstances add a third. In the wild they are found in large colonies, but are not schooling. In aquaria they are intolerant of each other, unless part of a bonded pr.

Longnose hawkfish, although they can eventually get pretty big, will do just fine in a 40g. They are not active swimmers, as they lack a swim bladder, but instead spend much of their time perching. They will move from perch to perch and will swim to beg for food.

Clown gobies will be fine in a fowlr as long as it has adequate cover in the rockwork. I've even had them spawn in tanks without sps.

The biggest issue I see is the puffer with your cuc. The larger they get, the more they can take out.
