I am posting this in the new aquarium thread as my year old 85 gallon has caused me too much money and heartache. I bought some rainbow hornet zoas a year ago at 4 for 60 dollars and have about 200 now. I bought a torch and an elegance in the last two months that are both dead. I've killed acans, but my monti is doing really well. The fish are fine and none of it made sense. Every time I would take a water sample in to the store, the parameters were perfect. So why was so much dying?
Luckily the store also services residential and commercial clients who don't want to deal with their tanks. So I called up the store and told them that I wanted them to service my tank two or three times while I was there as a tutorial.
My flow was bad, I had a sand bed bacterial issue that was causing biowarfare, and my return was screwed. Taking water to a fish store or checking your salinity at home doesn't come close to a personal tutorial. He showed me how he was cleaning, drilled an extra hole in part of my overflow area and already things are looking good. If I have to spend 300 this year in a tutorial, it is going to pay off in the long run.
So I would highly suggest any of you do this if things just aren't right.
