So, I've had a Blue Throat Trigger between 3 and 4 inches in length about 2 weeks now. It's been eating great and noticed some scratches on it's side. I noticed since cleaning the back glass it likes swimming near my MP40s looking at his reflection in the glass. (Does it most of the day). I noticed last night some scratches on his side. I thought maybe it was just some fighting and establishing pecking order with other fish (in a 340 gallon display). I noticed this afternoon after feeding that it was swimming really close to my MP40. It darted away really fast but escaped it then. Slowly drifted back as he ate food that was being pulled toward the MP40.
Then I saw it.. He got stuck to the mp 40 and flopped trying to get off and nearly got himself off a couple times.. I quickly unplugged the MP40 and he was off just fine and out swimming around and quickly went for more food....
Any of you have suicidal fish? I thought it was only sick fish that went for powerheads... But he seemed to really drift too close to it and let himself. He doesn't remember that powerheads are bad things... My other fish actually like getting blasted by the streams from the power heads. They'll swim against the current in the morning then turn around and swim from it. This is the first fish in all my reefing years that actually got stuck and seems healthy.
Do I need to shut that power head down if he insists on swimming near it? He just had some marks on his side, I don't know that he's hurt, but if he keeps doing it he's not going to be strong enough to get himself off one of these times. He'll spend most of his time eating and swimming in the open, doesn't show any signs of anything else wrong. He's gaining wait and is a somewhat shy eater, but he's learning where and when the food comes and eats well. My tangs tend to fight over taking their "morning showers" in front of this exact powerhead in the morning, but, don't know why the trigger wants to get attached to it.
It was scary and very sad to see him do this. I can't shut down all my power heads. I have 3 MP 40s and 2 Skimz S18 powerheads. The MP40s are all on anti-sync Reef Crest during the day and Lagoon ramping down to 20% and back up to 90% during the day.
