I have a blue yellow damsel and a royal gramma in a 110 gallon tank. On a very rare occasion, I’ve seen both fish yawn while simply swimming around which I think is caused by something irritating their gills or throat. However, I have seen them do this other times while protecting territory or squabbling which I’d say is normal.
These 2 fish have been through 2 QT tanks while my display went 76 plus days fallow. They have had a formalin bath 50 minutes in a bucket and have gone through medications such as paragard, metroplex, Cupramine 30 days at 0.5 level, and prazipro during the QT time frame. Of course, these medications were never mixed together.
Eventually I moved them to a clean new QT #2 because I saw a brown blotch on grammas lip and the occasional yawn from both fish. While attempting to catch them from QT 1 to QT 2, the gramma swam full speed into the glass and almost killed himself. He ended up surviving in QT 2 but got a bacterial infection, fins got ragged and he lost some color. They were in QT 2 for one month. I treated them with 14 days of kanaplex and 2 doses of prazipro for the damsel yawns and the royal grammas damaged fins and some color loss.
So then I added them to the display tank 5 weeks ago. The damsel immediately developed 2 sores on his body (colored scales missing and a pink flesh mark) The royal grammas fins and tail became a little ragged. Right away, I mixed up kanaplex in their food. The damsel healed up in 10 days but I have seen him yawn at least once. In the past week, the royal grammas fins and tail have become ragged again and I noticed 2 faint white areas behind his dorsal fin and on his tail. I began treating kanaplex in their food again 3 days ago with some improvement on the royal gramma and planning to do this for 14 days and see what happens.
Is their a medication I can mix up in their food to cure the irritation of the gills or throat?
Should I pull out all the rocks and catch these 2 fish and go fallow again in the display?
