Hi everyone,
I know everyone will be bored of the fish-less cycling questions and I sincerely apologise in advance.
I have a 300L tank. I’ve been setting up since July. I have the aqua scape in place, made from dry rock. The sand is in place and the saltwater has been added. The salinity is perfect.
I decided to do the dr Tim’s cycle and added the bacteria as required and then the ammonia cycle. It’s been three weeks and the ammonia level hasn’t gone down. If I’m honest it’s off the chart. I spoke with a shop and they said to add Pure Reef Balance balls. Which I have done. The ammonia level is still too high.
Could someone tell me what I’m missing or if I should add an alternative bacteria like Fritz Turbo please.

This is the issue with the LFS. If you have a problem, they have something to sell you to fix the problem.

In the future, instead of "cycling", perhaps add a piece of rock from an established tank instead to seed the new tank with nitrifying bacteria.

Where elevated ammonia is concerned, you could do a water change. And try adding a piece of live rock from an established tank.

Thank you. I’m going to leave it a few days and then do a 50% water change. I have some live rock. Although that’s covered in aiptasia. So wasn’t sure if I should use it.

I would wonder how much ammonia you added. For a nitrifying bacteria I like Aquavitro Seed which is basically SeaChem Stability. Although nitrites are not very harmful in saltwater, during the cycle I test ammonia and nitrites until both read 0, then I test nitrates as nitrites can mess with the nitrate test.

I would dose the bacteria according to label directions and you should see a change.

Did you use Dr Tim’s ammonia or something else?

You were right not to use the rock with Aiptasia, unless you're into that sort of thing.
