I am converting a 12’ x 6’ room in my basement to a fishroom. Current floor is concrete with a peeling paint on it. (Previous owner did a quick paint job to make the room look good, but it’s chipping up. I plan on scraping it up and want to put something down that will be non-skid.

what is the recommendation? Garage floor epoxy? Or is the stuff for pool decks better since it is rated to withstand salt swimming pools?

I'll let others jump in and answer your specific question, but I will ask if you have figured out where the water will run from the different areas in the room. Odds are you will figure that out soon enough, but it is better to understand that now and make any adjustments if you can. Good luck!

I think I have it figured out. There is already a sink in the room and one wall has electrical panel, gas meter and water meter. That leaves me with one 6’ empty wall near the sink

Never bothered to paint the floor of my basement fish room.

I would probably mix up paint with a couple handfuls of sand and go over the paint that is already down there rather than going through the effort of trying to scrape it off

The epoxy stuff is nice, but you'd def have to put in the flakes/texture so you don't slip/bust your rear. Once I finally retire...one day...in my "forever house"...I've always love the thought of doing the epoxy on the floor and then putting down some type of vented/garage floor tiles like these Grid-Loc ones. Have whatever falls through go toward a drain...a reefer can dream right?

Concrete is porous. It will absorb water and in our hobby it is when, not if, we will have a flood.

Floors are tough to prep if they have been painted before. I started with a belt sander and also tried a wire brush. I ended up using a concrete grinder rented from Home Depot. It was very quick.

I used cement backerboard for the first 3 inches of my wall and put epoxy on the backerboard and the floor - no seam in the room.

I used a pure epoxy on mine. West Systems Epoxy in my case. I spoke with their tech support line twice to ask questions - very helpful.
