Slowly heading the right way.
Good that you have the wife on board.

Mine was skeptical in the beginning, but turned to the reef side once all was set up and she could see the beauty in it.
Now she even starts discussing when I change the place of a coral or remove a fish.

Things are looking great! Too bad the RFG is being a pain, but i like your reverse check valve idea as a fix. although another gyre wouldn't be bad either since they're on sale right now...

Have a Happy Thanksgiving and keep us updated on how the tank is progressing!

Hey Neil, the tank looks great. Quick question, I only see the one gyre in the photo. Is that all you’re using for flow? Also, how’s the overflow working out for ya?

I had planned for 2, but I was getting crazy flow with only 1, so held off getting a second.

Then I got a 1” RFG ($23 vs $150) but I need to figure out a siphon break solution since it increases my drain-back by 9 gallons because of the required depth. Sump can handle it, but it ends up being 85% full when I turn pump off . If I raise its height in the tank, the ‘random’ part of RFG also means ‘over the side of the tank’.

The overflow turned out exactly how we thought it would. Siphon is silent; water dropping over the weir while keeping the water level at a safe level- sounds pretty loud. If I raise the standpipes to reduce the drop height, the emergency siphon is too close to the rim on the outer box and creates a flood risk. Actually, it will flood. It can’t create a siphon before the box overflows. Which means a ticked off wife and promises that it won’t happen again.

I can hear it in my master bedroom up one floor and across 40 feet. I’ll be talking to ems for a custom the second the wife complains about the noise. Which will be Monday, since the other side of that tank is her home office .

Cheers

He can make you a custom rear box to correct for the noise. This way you can at least keep the front box and save some $$$. I think @justingraham is running his that way but don’t quote me on it

Man, that would make it an easier sell. Thanks

Yep I am only running the ghost everflow front box
My rear box is made by Taylor pilot

I didn’t read the whole thread but if ur talking about the unbearable sound that comes from the front weir at about 850gph that mixer refuses to admit happens to his piece of poo designed overflow box

Yes it fixes that sound

Lol, that’s it. It sounds like Niagra falls at the 800 I’m putting through it.

Very disappointed after all of the ‘completely silent’ marketing. It was only after I bought it that reviews starting mentioning it. Was still sitting in its box because I had to relocate and I figured I’d at least give it a shot before dismissing it.

Thanks for the info

So, some deets and pics

Copper power in fish QT is holding steady at 1.88 ppm. No dosing since Sunday.

My sump is evaporating 4.5g/day at an ambient humidity of 76% and 74oF. I’m planning to make covers with thinwall insulated polycarbonate greenhouse panels, so this will hopefully drop down a little. I just ordered an innovative marine Hydrofill and matching pump, because it just looks really cool and I like the conductivity probe vs float switch, and it was $40 off. I have a brute 20 gallon tote I was planning to use, and I’ll have that plumbed into RODI barrel with a manual valve and float valve. It’ll only take a few minutes to fill every few days. I’ll roll my spare 50g in there for when I need to cover longer term absences.

After my apex failure, I’d rather use the BOB for monitoring as opposed to controlling the ato. I know it’s being paranoid, but I’m still not particularly thrilled at my apex situation.

Urchins are poop machines. My ammonia alert hit green for the second time in 3 days, despite adding prime. That QT and the DT are salinity matched, so I think I might put them in the DT tomorrow. Hopefully the skimmer and overflow will deal with some of the poop, plus it’ll add bioload to feed the bacteria.

I’ve never really discussed this part of my scape. About 60lbs of brs reef saver, judicious use of Jurassic glue and about 3 months of tinkering. 6 arches, a top swim through, and 3 different levels of small plateaus for light intensity variation.

That rock on lower left is an island with about 4” separation, for the Clove polyps that the wife specifically requested... I know, I know.

One of the thin legs on the living room side I’m planning on making into a ricordia garden.

Also note the heavy peppering of diatoms. Things are about to get ugly

So, one of my tiny urchins has been attacking the GHA that’s cropped up on the glass.
