I suspect I might be too. Brown powdery stuff that I thought was diatoms (most of it probably was, as it reversed eventually) but some hasn’t gone away. Just need time to get a sample and check under the scope.

How are you dealing with it? Hydrogen peroxide?

Still running zero nitrates since I haven’t had time to research dosing. Got the spectracide, just need to do the math and muster up the balls to add stump killer to my tank

Not peroxide. I overdosed nitrate to 100 , removing sand slowly, too slowly, diatomaceous earth filter, turned skimmer off, Dr. Tims waste away dosing, dosed silicate once, on Sunday. Lots of GAC. Following advise from that dino thread and Taricha. I dunno what I am doing really. It does not seem to be toxic. Just taking it slow and evaluating. ;Bored Not happy with my aquarium right now.

Calloways third birthday is coming up and we want to get the tank looking awesome- but with the to do list for everything else, I don’t have time to build my leds before June 25th. So Katie bought me two more viparspectras to match the one I got for coral QT. That’s what’s over the tank right now- a 165w viparspectra plus 2 3500k led tube shop lights from my garage. Currently FOWLR so wasn’t an issue.the dual tone is janky though

We discussed it and I returned them and (for $30 less expense...) got three mars aqua black boxes that I could daisy chain and put on timers, and the viparspectra goes back downstairs to fulfill its QT duties. Once I get the leds built- I can sell one mars aqua and keep two for frag grow out tank, or similar idea.

Very basic hanging kit, but I’m going to put them up today and update . I have some unistrut and eyebolts kicking around somewhere downstairs

Some work on the coral QT

Jebao ow-25 (thanks for the rec @Dubs83 !), aquaclear 50, viparspectra 165w, eheim 75w plus inkbird. 20gallon long

Busted out the microscope and had a fun hour in the basement lab...

Cyanobacterium that I eradicated from tank a few weeks ago with chemiclean, but I kept a small sample for giggles:

200x . Estimate around 50-75 microns in diameter

This one is a bit of my nannochloropsis culture that I started, then stored for a while. I restarted it a couple days ago with a 1:500 dilution from old stock and it took off.

Really lives up to its name- that’s about 3 microns across. 200x

The scope is decent, but definitely consumer toy grade. Ok for what I’m using it for, and I can see where I’d put 6-10 hours into it improving the tolerances etc, but not worth the effort.


Using the nanno to feed these guys- Tigriopus sp. copepods. I’ve been keeping them going since January by removing 75% and putting it into my sump, abd topping up the jar with nanno water, once a month. They just keep going.

Once I get some time next week- I’ll be scaling that jar up to this-

I really want a couple dragonets and I need a decent food supply!

So, siphoned off a few of those white bugs that are all over my glass and took a look under the scope...

It’s right in that size range that’s never been part of my training, so I’m a little at a loss. But remind me of sea monkeys that I grew as a kid- but not exactly.

Seeing 8 legs, 2 antenna, clam shell type carapace, possible single eye spot, cilia, ciliated leg joints. Green grey colour tinge, possible intact chloroplast like structures (possibly partially photosynthetic) . Carapace indented upon incident lighting.

More later. It’s late and I’m going to Simons store in 10.5 hours . Stoked!

Yeah, s I would have liked to have made an update regarding the 6 gorgeous corals and one big nem that I bought today, but I’ve only just finished dealing with the aftermath of nem vs jebao.

I am very much not amused right now.

100% WC, carbon, and an egg crate barrier. There was only 30 mins between checks so the longest he was stuck in the powerhead was 30 minutes. I can see a bunch of pinched ends to his tentacles but he reopened pretty quickly. Not fully but I think he’ll be ok

Nem seems to be doing better. Expanded a bit more. Water is staying clear but I am running carbon, so... who knows.

I’m kinda bummed, but not much more I can do at this point.

Back to the store for a few more things next week I think

How is the OW-25 working? that's HUGE! I'm using a tw-10 on a 20L QT tank and even that's too much. i've got an OW-25 opposite the CP-120 on my 5' 175.

The ow25 was bought with future use in a 50g low boy frag tank in mind- so I have it running on the second lowest setting in the 20l, and even that seems to be causing issues with the nem. She got sucked into it less than 2 hours after I put her in. My fault- traffic made me late for daycare and I should have made an eggcrate divider but planned to do it tonight.

I like the H mode, random pulsing. But 10% constant on slow is where it’s at right now

Hey Neil, when I got my nem, I placed it in an acclimation box with a rock in it. It cut back on a lot of the flow and allowed it to really wedge itself into the rock. Plus, it’s easier to spot feed and keep an eye on it.

It’s a long tentacle nem, which needs a sand bed to bury its foot. It had only been in store 5 days, and Simon was about to move it from a basket to a invert tank with sand bed. Suggested if I had some sand in my QT, it might be best to put him there. I just happened to have put sand in a Tupperware for a tube anemone and feather duster I thought I was getting too.

I should have put the eggcrate divider in but got distracted. 10 minutes work could have avoided everything. Now I’m just hoping the meshes that came with the gyres actually work properly, because I’m anxious about him wandering the DT if I screw up the placement.

I just checked this am and everything is looking good. Nem is inflated, extending tentacles, buried foot in sand, so I’m thinking he’ll be okay.

The war favites (not a favia based on it having single mouth within the colored zone) had pretty nice extension last night, looking for food, and the GSP is A LOT bigger than he first appeared.

Ordering some coral frenzy from amazon prime today, and picking up a shrimp for the nem.
