Fishy smell

Morning,

So, I have my 120g up and running. My tank kinda has a "fishy smell" No way I said.. How can that be?

My partner doesn't care for the fishy smell lol.. What can I do? Is carbon a good option? Does all tanks smell kinda fishy?
whats you nitrates? Only reason i ask is because recently my nitrates spiked to 80 and my tank smelled despite running carbon

Just a suggestion, I stopped running carbon a year ago. I have been running seeded bio media in the sump and as other have stated clean my skimmer and filter sock when the get dirty.

My next question is it a real fishy smell or does it smell like a stagnant pond? Stagnant pond could be high nitrates and phosphates and fishy would be decay either from over feeding or dead fish?

Just as everyone says. Run carbon in a reactor if you don't want the smell. YOu can also have an sps dominant tank like I have and your water will smell like sweet candy. If you get over top of the aquarium or smell the water and it doesn't have that smell then an adjustment is needed.

YEs. Also keep your skimmer cleaned at all times and in good working order. You do have another option and that is to perform regular water changes. That's you options. Keep up good husbandry with good mechanical filtration or perform regular water changes.
