Hello all,

I added a flame angel to my system about a week ago- and now his fins are willowing away and he’s swimming poorly, i’m bringing him to my LFS now. What do you think caused this? I have a purple tang in my tank, and also have two clownfish that I’ve seen picking at him. :/

Thanks guys...

darn clowns once they get territorial are monsters. With shredded fins, don't expect much from LFS.

You have a Purple Tang in a 35 Hex? Not nearly enough space. 35 is to small for allot of fish. I agree with the above post. Your clowns own that small tank.
Please consider a 100g or bigger tank for a home for your tang. Otherwise it will just suffer in that tiny home.

Not a 35 hex... it’s in my 75, I have two tanks

Consider fin rot? Can you post a picture?

I saw your signature and could only guess since that’s all you listed there. Sorry for the assumption.. but 75 is still small for those tangs, IMHO.

That is picture from the LFS. That looked like healed fin injury , except the tail. Hard to tell with clear fins.
What about current picture?

does this mean I shouldn’t put any more fish into that tank?
Probably not but ultimately although at a cost, a 55g or larger that is reef ready will make you and the occupants happy and allow space for swimming and hiding which will reduce territorial issue at hand.
You can then add more fish at coral BUT slowly.

I would not add fish into a tank unless all the fish are healthy in the tank. Add healthy fish into sick tank, the chance of them dying skyrocket to almost certain.

That pic was me bringing him back to the LFS. He’s back at the LFS now in his own tank... i’m just hoping for the best.

Now that you remove him, leave it as is for now. Is your other fish sick? Don’t add any fish until you make sure the tang is healthy and eating.
75 gal is likely not adequate to house a purple tang for long term IMO. However you can keep a small Purple in it healthy for several years. This does limited the kind and the numbers of other fish you can add.
Be patient and not add another fish or several weeks at least.

Looking at your picture, the fins looks OK, at least not enough to cause swimming problem. Is he alway pointing his snout to the top? Breathing fast? If yes on both he likely to have gill problem. Gill flukes or some sort of gill injury or infection.

Very difficult to DX from pictures like this. How they act is so important. Now that he is back at the LFS you don’t have to worry about it.

Purple Tang has HLLE, I’m going to try to add Spirulina shrimp to its diet, along with vitamin soaked green seaweed, and mysis.
