Flame Angel Died after Water Change

Just to be clear- a quarantine provides a separate place for medicating sick fish, and a chance to protect previous inhabitants of your reef from diseases coming in with new additions. Lack of a quarantine did not kill this fish.

I was going to say what MnFinh1 just did- newly imported fish go through a lot of stresses, and sometimes during the first few weeks they succumb to that. Yours was not yet out of that window of danger.

The main issue I see is lack of RO, but you are addressing that.
Quarantine prevents foreign substance and issues from occurring before fish reach display tank. In addition, the quarantine process allows treatment of common disease and parasites within a controlled environment, reduces the stress of acclimation, reduces costs by reducing fish mortality, allows you easy observation of new fish in case of disease as mentioned and reduces the cost of medication opposed to medicating an entire display tank.
 
IMHO - the fish was 'not great' beforehand - and the water change set it off. For example - I just changed water in my discus tank - all the fish were eating, doing fine, etc - I did a water change - 2 had jumped out - and 2 were dead (they were small)

What I think we forget is that ammonia - depends greatly on pH - the pH in my discus tank was probably 5 before the water change - and 8 after. If there is an ammonia issue - or filter issue - thats going to cause problem - becuase Free ammonia relates strongly to pH.

That said - I think its also important to realize that 'fish die'. Especially 2-3 weeks old. It depends how they were collected, shipped, their condition, etc.

PS - I'm sorry for your loss - and PPS I am not sure your water change or sand mixing had anything to do with it. I might talk to the place you bought it - and ask - if there is a possibility for a discount on a replacement - which I would do once the tank is a little more stable

Agree. the fish may have been stressed from transport, handling and new to system but this is associated with water and well water is perhaps the worse to introduce into a closed system

Yes - you're right - at the same time I say - No - not entirely. If the Display tank - has disease in it - all the quarantine in the world is not going to prevent that fish from getting the disease thats in the DT (hidden). This is one of the problems with QT tanks - which I support. If the fish in your tank are 'immune' - and you add a new fish in 'not great' condition - they very well can get sick. And - in fact - they can get sick enough to overwhelm (due to numbers and depending on the filtration) - the immunity of the current residents.

EDIT - PS - the key is following the same protocol for all of your fish. IMHO

supposedly the LFS which is a reef specific store that has been around for awhile QTs all of their fish for a few weeks before going out to the sales floor and you can see the fish where the QT them.

Ill just take it slow and wait some time to add more fish until after I get the RODI water established in the tank

is there a way to tell if you tank has this invisible disease?

I never saw any Ich on the flame angel or have I seen any Ich on any other fish.

not knowing the full spectrum of fish diseases is there a way to tell if you have something besides everything dying?

the emerald crab being dead as well is what makes me believe more of some kind of spike happening after the change and the fluctuation in PH being a thing.

I agree with you - It could be multiple things - as already described. And no - there is not. It was not specifically a comment related to your tank - but rather a general tank. In other words it was a question about QT that I responded to

In your case - The emerald crab dying as well as the flame angel suggests a more general problem - but - if you think about it - you could also say - if those 2 died - why not the rest? Right? - Which is why no one knows 'for sure'. I think your flame angel was exposed to something in the tank - or was sick besides what was in your tank and died. Why the emerald crab died - a coincidence. Unfortunately its hard to completely answer. But - hopefully some of the comments helped

BTW - curious - did you ask the store what might have happened? Since they sold the fish, etc - maybe they have a suggestion?

No I haven’t had the chance to. I’ll see what they say.

the owner isn’t the most pleasant person. Likes yo talk down to people. So I’m sure it will go well :oops:
