Hi everyone. I have had a flame angel in QT for 4 weeks. The day before i moved it from QT I thought his fin might have been missing small top tip piece but decided lrob not so I moved it to DT. I moved it to my DT 3 days ago. Yesterday i noticed its tail fin looked to have a tear in the top. Today it had another tear. It looks like its getting frayed. I have 65 gal fowlr. Water parm ammonia 0 nitrates 2 sal .24 temp 78 30% WC every month in thw DT. Thw QT tank is 10 gal ammonia 0 nitrates 15 temp 79 sal .24 did 25-50% WC every 4-5 days i have 2 clowns and a neon goby and coral banded shrimp in there with him. FA is eating fine and swimming around picking at the live rock other thanthe fin fraying it seems great. Along with cuc. Any ideals what could be causing this. Is its a sickness id like to help it before too far gone. This is my 3rd attempt at a FA. I really was hopeful this is the longest one has lived

Mmmm, IMO the coral banded shrimp is not giving any space in it's territory.
As you know they will go after any fish any size.
Cause he's new the FA needs to get used to all the tank mates, that said give it some time.
Any pics that you can show us?

Yeah don't recall ever seeing frayed/split fins from anything other than aggression. Like diesel said probably the CB but it could be the clowns too. They can be very territorial and it wouldn't be the first time I've seen even a percula or amp beat up on something. My perc pair is very peaceful unless someone approaches one of their anemones including my hand sometimes.

I can't get him to be still to get pic. U think the coral B shrimp? I have seen him snap at the FA twice since hes been I. There. I can take the CBshrimp back if I have to. The FA is most important to me.

I had a banded coral shrimp that used to try and chase down a 15" snowflake eel. He was relentless.
+1 on the clowns as well. the larger of the two clowns I have gave my fire fish a lot of grief for the first 10 days or so before finally leaving him be.

I'm guessing the shrimp too, but if it would make you feel better for people to see the issue, you can always post a short phone video when pictures won't work.

I also have a flame with blue tang for last 3 weeks in quarantine, just noticed yesterday his tail fin looks a bit frayed.... I see consensus is aggression, perhaps from tang. They both seem to be eating and doing well, although tang was flashing/ rubbing for a couple days, now has settled down... opinions pls , many thanks

Hi! I have coral beauty angel that had a rough time in quarantine and had frayed fins. After ruling out infection it seemed to be caused by the poor water quality in the qt tank. When I moved the fish to the dt the fins healed. I feed frozen hikari mega marine angel. I've noticed that if I don't for a week or so it will show some frayed fins. Its anecdotal but it seems to be sensitive to water quality

Thanks sstanley, much appreciated, been monitoring water closely with changes ever couple or three days... leaning towards putting her in dt as it only has 2 clowns 75 gal...running 3 months
