Flame Angel?

I really like their look but I have a mixed reef tank. All I read is "with caution". Any experience or comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Used to have a Flame. Sps dominated tank. Model citizen. Wonderful fish. Lost him to marine velvet that I picked up in the water surrounding a frag.

Mine has been a model citizen. Never saw him pick at any of my LPS, zoa's, or montis. However, I've read some posts on here where people said their flame angel went after their coral. Seems to be about a 50/50 chance.

Flame angel is one of my favorite fish. However, I would not add to any tank with Acropora, unless your ok with no Polyp extension. Softie and LPS tank they are fine

I had to remove mine few years ago and gave it away. few SPS keepers told me "get rid of it' lol

I have one and I have no problems with it. We feed a little heavy so he's probably always full.

I’m unsure what you’re asking. Do you want to know what ‘with caution’ means or are you asking whether there’s been some kind of mistake in labeling the flame angel thusly. Whether a flame angel is reef safe or not gets asked regularly, and there are dozens of threads as a result. All end up in about the same place. Some folks report that their flame is well behaved, others that it destroyed their tank. Why the different reports? A few reasons. Fish are individuals, so some will behave differently than others. Tanks are different, with varied coral choices, fish populations and feeding schedules. Reefers are different. Some tolerate some nipping, others freak out at the first signs. My general advice is that if you are among the latter, don’t get one.

I appreciate the well written response. My tank is almost a year old and I don't want to cause too much possible stress or damage to my current inhabitants. I have watched them grow and multiply but I really like the color of the Angel. I am hearing that it is all a matter of fish personality. I will chew on all of the responses and decide if I want to roll the dice. Thank you

I had one who killed my large clam. It nipped the clam constantly out of the blue and by the time I caught the fish the clam was a gonner.

I had one - did very well - no problems - I have heard other horror stories. Small angels can be risky or fine - I also bought a lemon peel angel that from the first 5 minutes tried (successfully) - to bite, eat every coral in the tank. It took 2 weeks to trap him in a fish trap. If you want to keep one - I would try to get a smaller one - thats eating well (as compared to a wild-caught specimen thats been out of the ocean only a short time) - so they are used to eating 'fish foods' not corals
