I appreciate the suggestion, and agree the bellus angel is awesome looking! Unfortunately I run a smaller tank (40B) which would probably be cruel for an angel that size.

Ahh, yeah it might be on the small side of things.
Guess you're just gonna have to go with a Candy Bass and give up on angels all together

I've had my flame for over 3 years. Leaves my coral alone and not aggressive. Always gets a cube of angel food to help the diet out.

Iv had a flame angel and it terrorized my tank , lps and sps nipping
Tank was well feed but it just kept nipping
Took me 3 weeks to trap him and was a happy day once I got him out
I love the look of the fish but they just can't be trusted

I have acros, acans, zoa's, stylo's, mushrooms, Monti's... My flame angel has never touched them. I had a hammer a long time ago but my tank wasn't stable and it died. Definitely not my flame angels fault. I feed my tank twice a day, I think people with issues don't feed enough. I highly recommend a flame angel as a reef safe fish.

I have a Coral Beauty in my tank, and I believe they stay about 1" smaller than the flame angels. I have read more positive results with Coral Beauty's over Flame Angels, that's why I chose the CB. If you like the color/flash, make sure to get a bright orange CB, not a dull one. Mine is very bright, high energy and eats like a piranha.

Hasn't touched any of my corals and goes crazy when the autofeeder turns on and when I feed frozen mix

I’ve had a flame and a coral beauty in all three of my tanks, all being different fish , not one picked on anything, they might battle alittle at first but after a day or two they will kiss and make up, fish choices should be low on the priority list when u have a reef tank, lighting, flow, water parameters should make u worry!

Hi Folks,

So I've been doing a fair amount of reading on flame angels and I know at this point that they are considered "with caution" for a tank with corals. The majority of the threads I came across seemed to indicate the fleshier corals like acans, mushrooms, etc., were the most likely victims of flame angel nipping.

With that said, I am planning on a euphyllia dominated tank (torches and hammers) and was curious if any of you had experience with flame angels and these kinds of corals and if they were problematic?

Flames are one of my fav fish. First one was a model citizen for almost two years then one morning I found him stuck in a rock crevice dead, from no idea what.

The other one which was his replacement wasn’t playing nice with a bunch of my other fish, now living in my 29 cube frag setup with two friendly roommates.

Never saw either nip at any coral, doesn’t mean they didn’t when I was at work.

I almost always have Euphillia in my tank, and almost always have Flame angels in my tank. Harem of flame angels in my 320 gal and 420 gal tanks in the past. I also have a pair of Flame angel in my 65 gal anemone reef with frogspawn. I have never seen them pick at SPS or Frogspawn. My Euphillia is doing great and growing fast.
I love to see Fishes spawn in my tank. Flame Angles put up a spectacular show almost every night at dust. I have a video on my Flame Angel spawn on YouTube somewhere. I attach it here when I find it.

I have tried three different times to have Flames in my tanks. 1st time no issues, 2nd and 3rd complete disasters. I love the look of the fish, but no luck for me since the first one.

I just saw read that you wanted to add either wrasse or flame angle but also wanted to add a Dragonett to the tank later. I would advise that you not do this. All the wrasses and pygmy angels are very good hunters and in a 40 gal breeder will cause the Dragonett to starve.
You can keep Mandarin in small tank if you set it up right. I keep a fat Mandarin in a 22 gal cube with a Magnifica, Crocea and a pair of clowns for several years. I also keep a Fat pair of Mandarin in my 65 gal tank, until I add a Flame angel. After 3 months, the Mandarins were getting thinner and thinner. I have to remove them to another tank.
Small Wrasses and Pygmy angles are direct competitor of Mandarin for food.
Word of caution regarding Six-line wrasses. About 15 years ago, my main DT was a 420 gal reef that was thriving. In it there were a Mandrin pair that was spawning regularly and a Six-line pair. They are all doing great together for more than 1 year. Out of the blue, one day the Six-line attacked my female Mandarin. It happened right in front of me and I cannot do anything about it. Only took a few seconds. The wrasse pair dived an peck out the eye of the female Mandarin. Once this accomplished they totally ignored her. My fat, egg engorged female Mandarin was emaciated and starving when I euthanized her a month late r.

I have always thought that fish just act without malice. Seeing what happened right in front of my eye, I cannot help but label the Six-Line pair as devil spawned. Fortunately, I was able to trapped them out in about 1 week. Now Six-line wrasse only get into my reef over my dead body.

My two young Flame Angels in my 65 gal tank. Two Magnifica(clones) on this end, and a Blue Gigantea on the other end. FrogSpawn also. The younger Flame is small, Just about as long as my Azure damsel. The larger Flame Angel have not change sex to Male completely yet, although I think he will fully turn to full male in the near future.

Does anyone have experience with the captive bred flame angels? Any better than wild caught as far as coral nipping?

I had a flame in a mixed tank and he never bothered anything he liked to chase the yellow Tang but that was it

My flame harassed one coral - a favia - without mercy, but has been good with M. lordhowensis, all other faviids, zoanthids, Euphyllias, Montiporas, Seriatophoras, Stylophoras ... and a couple of corals that ... I really don't know what they are. My coral beauty picks at random corals, along with every other hard surface in the aquarium, but never does damage.

As for aggression, my flame chases the coral beauty regularly throughout the day - but at night, when the blues alone light the tank . . . he dances for her, swooping to meet her and rising to invite her. (She doesn't seem all that interested . . . )
