I introduced a flame hawkfish into my display from QT last night. My kole tang has been pretty relentless. Mostly trying to hit him with his tail but some nipping as well. The hawkfish is not very good at hiding and continues to hang around the rock that the tang is most adamant about defending. How far should I let things go? This is the first tank aggression issue that I have had.

Removing one and putting in an acclimation box for a few days can help.

Placing a mirror at one end of the tank may distract the tang as well.

A mirror or picture of another larger Tang. I used a larger picture and the aggression stopped. My Hawk was getting hammered until I printed the picture out and taped it to the tank. I got this idea from others that have had success.

My kole tang hates my flame hawkfish too. They were added the same time about 10 months ago. He still chases him almost everyday but usually for just a couple of seconds. No nipping. Occasionally he will chase him all the way around the tank (5 foot tank). Unless he has physical damage I wouldn't worry too much. The hawkfish would be relatively easy to scoop if he perches somewhere isolated should you need to remove him. Is the hawk able to eat when you feed or does the chase continue during feeding time as well?

I'll try a picture and mirror. The hawkfish didn't eat this morning but the tang wasn't bothering him. I fed him before adding to the display last night so he should be OK for now.

Any specific tang? Should I go with another kole?

My yellow tang is a Dick, with him, when I put in any fish, especially my sail fin and my Naso, it lasted 3 days with both. He still runs at my sail fin from time to time but for the most part they live in harmony. The reason being that is still going on is because they are both zebrasoma's.

I stopped by the house over lunch. There was still some harassment but it was intermittent. I threw in a little food and the hawkfish ate. Just to be safe I put up a picture of a kole tang. Kind of funny to see his reaction. Definitely settled him down.
