Do yellow coris wrasses ever bounce against things to shake up pods? Or in response to aggression?
I think I'm seeing either or both of these two things.
Else the wrasse has a flea (Ich, whatever). But the flashing is extremely rare. I've watched the fish for literally a few hours and can count on one hand how many times I see it. But I definitely see it- it's not just bumping into stuff when the pump ramps up (which it seemed like initially).
The TL;DNR:
I have a new baby yellow coris wrasse, came out of QT from the LFS (10 days in green/blue liquid, I don't remember all the names of the medications the LFS owner was throwing at me). I've said this before here but my LFS has a reputation for really doing QT right, to the point where as a newbie dealing with a tank that may have to come down in less than a year for a move, I decided early on to "trust" the LFS and not do my own QT (I have a QT tank and the equipment to do it though); I felt I could do more damage than prevention, compared to what they do at the shop, and worst case, I bail out and re-establish a tank after we move.
So, tank is new, has two outwardly very healthy baby clowns that have grown quite a bit in a month, and an outwardly healthy Royal Gramma that seems determined to eat my out of house and home, is buddies with the clowns and vice versa.
The Gramma has issues with the new wrasse (the Gramma is the bigest fish in the tank). The crazy Gramma charged the wrasse in the bag when I was temp acclimating. Ever since, the Gramma is charging the wrasse a few times an hour, other times swims near it and lets it be. I've seen no nipping, just territorial "get out of here" seeming behevior.
The new yellow coris wrasse ate 3 of the TDO Chroma pellets (small) in the acclimation bucket, went into the tank, and within 1 minute was in the sand.
The wrasse is half the size of everyone else (well, maybe a bit bigger but definitely the minnow in this pond).
Next day wrasse was out and about all day, and has been that way for 3 days now (sleeps buried in the sand, it seems I can set my watch to when he goes to bed). Eating TDO pellets but I have to invest time to get them to it, because the Gramma seems to be making sure the wrasse stays near the bottom and doesn't get too uppity.
The wrasse seems able to easily out maneuver the Gramma and stays "put down", but also doesn't give too much ground (feisty).
I have distinctly noticed that after the Gramma charges, the wrasse will start pounding a few times on the sand and even rock.
I also added two types of pods in the last week and it has changed all the fish behavior in the tank (they poke at rocks and sand and are more fascinated with it- banging into stuff very occasionally when they never used to go near rock or substrate).
