This is a deep water ocean fish that displays a light to aid in it's search for food.
The bio-luminescent bacteria acts as a lure for food and mates. Very cool.

The photograph shows the fish lighting up.

I saw these once at a local aquarium when I was a kid, very cool and great shot. Where did you pick them up? I saw them on live aquaria many years ago but haven't seen them since.
 
That's awesome. None of the lfs around me have that kind of variety. If you have anymore shots I'd love to see them.

I was at Atlantis aquarium in New York over the weekend. It was a rare treat to see the tank at night with all the fish spawning. When the lights were totally out, the flashlight fish came out. Amazing how fast they were. It looks really weird when they swim straight at you... almost alien!
