Setting up my new tank I have a Red Sea reef mat 500. My question is on the plumbing, do I need a gate valve for precise control or will a simple ball valve on the main drain work to control the flow, and noise?

Both can work, but a gate valve gives better flow control and will help a lot with fine-tuning flow rates to limit noise.

agreed, also gate valves are less prone to leaks.
