Going around a 1 1/2" deep. I was at 1" to 3/4" deep before I started removing this stuff. Going to take a couple weeks to complete it.

Will removing the sand bed help reduce your nitrates ...is that the reason your removing it Don ...?

No, it’s because of the on going diatom issues coming from the sand. I’m not worried about my nitrates, still around 30ppm.

I've still got some of my sand in a bucket that I took out tonight ...I'll make a photo before I throw it ...taking my sand out has certainly helped with my dinos ...I was hoping removing mine might help reduce my nitrates ...

It was live sand not sure of the brand now .was in the tank for about 2years (so was probably due to be changed when I think about it )The crap pieces are broken muscle shells, snail shells ,broken dead coral monti's mostly ....

Never used that brand, so I can’t speak to it. Like I said, mine I got from “Marco rocks” sold as aragonite sand. Looking at it, it’s full of gray, brown, reddish and tan pieces. I’m sure it’s feeding the diatoms with silicate.

I won't be using it again ...
From what I've read silicate is normally depleted quite fast in a reef tank ...I'm going too start dosing it too get diatoms too out compete the dinos ...maybe you should send me your sand

Pretty 100% sure I kept having diatoms. Some sand is silicate based, like pool or play sands. They will consistently release silicate.
