Flip's Reef

Damm Leo. Thought this gonna be ur nano setup lol. I got dibs on the sump btw. Thing looks better than my display. Did mike help u build it?

Hey bro!

Yup. Mike's back in the game too, though he never really left. LOL! He always says that, then gets bored and jumps back in. :D My kinda guy!

That's who I got my ritteri anemone from, too, Huy.

Yeah, this acrylic tank turned out really nice. I have yet to take any good pics of it. Been using my phone due to schedule conflicts with the kids' activities and stuff. You'll know what that really means, soon enough, my friend. :D

Yeah! Haha! This is my nano. (I see what you did there). ;)

just replace a section at a time so you can always have fresh looking sand. that's what I plan on adding to my routine soon. ;)

I'm going to do that with mine. I'm already starting to slowly siphon out sand with each water change. How big of a "section" are you thinking -- 1/4 of the tank at a time?

I haven't really thought about it. But maybe 1/4 section every 3-4 months might be good. The reef flakes you guys are talking about is made by Tropic Eden right? That's what I have now and really like it. :)

Yes, Tropic Eden is the stuff I am referring to. It's awesome stuff. :) I used 6, 15lb bags to get the sand bed you see in my pics. My sand bed in the DT is will over 4". It looks like kitty litter now. :D LOL

Never tired it . It was always OOS when I wanted some . LOL

I just use the Fiji Pink since it's a good size grain . So when r you going back in the house ? Did u finish the canopy on the DT yet ?

Are the Reefflakes bigger grain size compared to the CaribSea Special Grade? My sand bed looks awful (subjectively speaking) and is just forming dunes everywhere. It's to the point now where I can see a few pieces of the scrap acrylic that I laid down to protect the bottom of the main tank (annoying!!). Besides blowing around, I think that the Reefflakes are whiter, which I'm a fan of. Seriously kicking myself over the decision... But, as Marvin said, it's not like it can't be undone.

I don't think they are smaller, but they are more consistent in size. Definitely whiter, but that won't matter in a few months. :D I really enjoy how much cleaner it is to work with.

Oh yeah guys... I did get my canopy done. The white laminate on the inside turned out perfect. :D I've been fighting a nasty cold/flu, so I've been out of pocket. I'll try to get some pics up after I get the canopy in place. It's a lot heavier than I thought it was going to be. D'oh!

I added a psychedelic Mandarin and a solar wrasse to the main tank today. I also added a porcupine puffer to the refugium. The puffer is getting along nicely with it's tank mate and the other two are doing fine as well. The Mandarin eats frozen foods, and that's the only reason I bought him... Actually, I should say her. :)

My wife loves all three off them and wishes I could put the little puffer in the DT. She understands my POV on that though... When he outgrows the tank, he'll be moved to a 400g tank that should keep him happy for a long time.

Will try to get pics when I can, butt so far all is well.

Oh yeah... I also started fab work on the secondary calcium reactor chamber too. I wound up gluing the probe holder to the top of the reactor due to the way the thing was designed. It's all good though. It should serve its purpose well.

Here's some pics of what went down today and yesterday:

The canopy.

This was sent to me from my builder/buddy directly from his shop. It's laminated white on the inside. I can't tell you how much I'm loving this stuff for all intents and purposes! It's cleans easily, and it's extremely tough.

And there it is over my tank. I used a couple of 2x4's to get the height I wanted, and there's only MH's in there right now. No more supplemental T5's. To be honest, I like the way the tank looks without them.

There's a piano hinge on the back that will allow the canopy to flip up when I need it to. Also, I monitored heat tonight, and it only got up to 78F. Pleased with that.

The Livestock additions:

Wife took this shot with her iPhone. LOL! Don't worry... I burped him and he's happy now. :)

His tank mate (sold to me as a Temnicki Fairy Wrasse) is happy with him in there, too. They're pretty fond of each other for now.

I don't really know if this one's a girl or boy yet... it's a pretty big one, though. It ate food at the LFS, and it fed on Rod's Food and some frozen brine this weekend. I'm stoked about this find! My favorite fish, hands down (they don't have to be $400 for me to love them) :nono: I was going to wait awhile before adding this one, but since it was eating, and there were people just waiting in line for me to say no, I grabbed it up. :D

Finally, I added this guy. He was sold to me as a Solar Wrasse (male), and the colors on him are insane! I can't get a good pic of him because he's still in skittish mode. I'll try to get better ones later.

So far so good. No complaints by any of the residence, and the corals seem to be coloring-up nicely. I'm sure that has a lot to do with the Radiums though. Most of these corals were under LEDs when sold to me. They were a bit off-color because of it. However, you guys should've seen these guys' DTs!!!! Gud Lawd!

Anyway :peace: Have a great Monday! (And day off, for those of you that have it off) :D

Fantastic update, Leo! I really like mandarins too and I'd like to find one that eats frozen someday for my smaller display. The canopy turned out really nice -- especially the laminate work, which isn't an easy task! Glad to hear everything else is coming together as planned. I'll stay tuned.

Thanks dude! It did turn out really nice. I'm proud to have the guy local to me. :)

Oh, and this shot is for you zib! ;) Can you get yours this fat? LOL!

"Sounds like a dare, Harry!" (Dumb & Dumber quote). That's going to be tough to beat...healthy mo-fo. Really awesome colors though. Melanarus wrasses are so gorgeous. I don't think you can find a prettier fish for the price (save for a mandarin). Verrrry nice mi amigo.

Thanks bro! Great quote, too! LOL! Very true on the price tip. I wish he'd stay that color forever.

I love how that pic looks like he's giving you the "cholo eye." LOL! "Wha choo lookin' at, essay?!"

This next round of pictures are mainly for my reference. I'm almost is "kick back and watch things grow" mode so I figured some reference shots were in order:

Hoping that RTN goes away. It's actually getting better.
