Ok. So I'm new to reefs and I just started my 56 gal tank. I'm also installing a 20 gal sump but I'm worried about flooding as my power gets turned off atleast once a month due to new construction in my area.
I was thinking of installing a float valve in the sump to cut off the supply line and an anti siphon valve on the return.
Is this a good idea, am I just crazy, is there a better option?
Thanks.

You can use a check valve or a siphon break. However there are many opinions on these methods as both can fail for several reasons. The most effective way to prevent a flood is to leave enough freeboard or space in the sump for the water will come back to the sump when the power shuts off. Your returns should be just below the water level of the tank so that when it shuts down not much water will drain into your sump. You can calculate how much freeboard you will need by multiplying the length of your tank by the width of your tank by the depth of your return and dividing that number by 231. This will give you the amount of gallons that will drain into your sump. Measurements have to be in inches. Once you figure out this number just make sure to leave atleast that much room in the sump.
