Floating canopy.

It's not a full on canopy per se.
Rather than have the lights hanging or on arms. I prefer the aestetics of a sleek canopy. Somewhat along the lines of the canopy of the BRS 160.

As well, I am trying to keep my options open should I decide to suppliment the LEDS with T5's.
If I don't forget, I'll post a rendering I have on my work puter.

Hanging from the ceiling wasn't really on option for me so used electrical conduit to make a mount. It's a little rough, but it works. I used 1/4" tubing and it's now support 30ish pounds of canopy. It is a little sketchy though. If I could go back I'd use 1/2".

Got a break here at work.
Here is the canopy idea.
I have decided that rather than hang the canopy. I will use galvanized pipe ( sealed of course) and feet to make a stand off. Which I can then bolt to the live edge.

That gives me a warm and fuzzy feeling without worrying if the cables will hold.

The top pic is as you would be looking up at the light. Rather than see the bowels of the canopy, there would be a sheet of 1/16 stainless covering everything else.

I like that.
How did you mount it?

The structural component mounting it to the wall is a 4.5"x4.5" 1/8" wall aluminum tube. It is mounted to three studs in the wall with 3 1/4" lag bolts in each stud. This is plenty strong, I can hang from it. It has an acrylic inner and outer frame. The frames are supported by some 80/20 extrusions. I designed some internal ducting and added a fan to keep the T5s cool. It was a good bit of work and wasn't cheap, but I was set on radions + t5s so I had to do something custom. I am very happy with how it came out... looks super clean in person with no wires showing at all.

If you are interested in something like this shoot me a pm and I can send you the CAD or some drawings.
