Flooding ??

Hey guys quick question, is there something that you can buy that cuts power to you return pumps in case there is an overflow in your sump?

Yes, electronic float switch. Autotopoff.com has solutions that work.

If your sump is overflowing and you cut power to your return pump you will have even more water drain from the display tank into your sump. What are you trying to accomplish?

Drill it! Super easy.
Agreed, especially if you go with the Eshopps Eclipse overflows, they basically give you everything, all you need is a drill and 20 minutes and you'll have a drilled tank :) I have pictures in my build thread if you want to take a look :)

I have an idea...here is my solution ,let me hear your guys thoughts. I will use a empty canister filter to suck water out of the tank and put the return of the canister into a filter sock thay drains into a tank/sump below the main display , put the usual bio media and macroalge in the middle section, and at the other end a return pump that puts the water back to the main display. I would use the float switch for the canister and return pump...
Problem solved lol let's hear what you guys think

Sounds sketchy and i wouldnt want the risk. You would be better of just using a hob overflow.
Yea I'm reading on that now , reefers seem 50/50 on it , do you have experience with them ?

I do. Its been flawless for me (knock on wood) and restarts every time. I actually dont know what brand it is, it came with an existing setup. Now im curious though, will look when i get home.

It restarts on its own? How large is your reef ?

You have to start the initial siphon but after that if you shut off your return pump and then turn it back on the siphon automatically restarts itself as long as you do not ever break siphon

Check out Lifereef overflows, excellent history of having no failures that I could find. I ended up drilling my tank but if I wasn' going to then I was going that route with Jeff's overflow. I think his largest one handles 1200 GPH though so hopefully thats enough. I did get a custom sump/skimmer/fuge from him which I love though. He does some awesome work and is great to work with.
