So I am looking to upgrade my existing tank, and seeing some possibilities on Craig's list, but want to make sure I'm not shooting my self in the foot. I currently have a 90g (I think) with no sump. It's in the only spot in the house that a large tank will fit. Problem is that it is sitting parallel with the floor joists. They are 2x6 joists with a 12' span sitting on 2x4 sill on the block foundation and on the center beam of the house. So the way the tank is now its really only sitting on one floor joist. Wondering how much of an issue I will have in the future with the existing tank and what limits I would have with going bigger. Even if it just ended up being a 100g with a sump

This is a joke right? 2" x 6" floor joists on a 12' span is against code in every state. I wouldn't put a large aquarium in there. You sure you didn't mean 2" x 10"?

Not a joke, sorry and you are right not 2x6, they are 2x8. Not sure where that came from. I need to watch what I type on the phone

Okay, with 2" x 8" joist you are at a minimum. Depending on the species of wood, the maximum allowable span is between 12 and 13 feet. Google floor joist span chart. I know all these figures off the top of my head - I'm a home builder. I would not recommend placing a large aquarium on just one joist. There are ways to beef up your floor. Like, what we call fireblocking, 14 1/2" blocks of wood between the joists to spread the weight. I would suggest you consider shoring up the area where you'll put the aquarium.

Thank you. That's pretty much what I figured. But with a finished basement under that part I will need to plan out how I am going to support it. Thinking of a power beam or tgi with Lolly columns. Will have to do something creative to hide it an not royally **** off the wife

If the ceiling isn't finished, you could easily double up two joists on the outside and put blocks between them every 16 inches.
