So I googled around and couldn't find much so here I am R2R let me know what you think.

Are they a gimmick, do the really work, are they more of a con than pro?

Hmm

What's the difference to those and the ones marine depot has?

I had the one from Marine Depot. They work very well and basically your return functions like a power head. I had (2) k3's in my 75 and didn't want to put another one in so I put a flow accelerator on my return line. It is a tight stream of water though.

But dies it really multiply the flow that much?

For me, if I had my return angled up out of the water and turned my return pump on it would shoot the water to the other side of my 75 gallon so about 4 foot. I put the flow accelerator on and forgot to angle it back down into the water and when I turned the return pump on the flow accelerator shot the water across the room and hit the wall about 8-9 feet away.

Simple answer is yes they are a wonderful invention that works great.

Long answer I have 2 on my 75G closed loop. Before adding them I didn't have all that much flow and was seeing issues of settling. I added the penductors (they are all the same, just different design) and left the lines in the direction they were pointing. Fired up the pump and sandstorm all over the place. The flow was at least 2 to 3 times as strong and I was using a Ocean Runner 6500 as the pump. After some adjusting of the loc line and aiming it AWAY from the sand, all was well. The flow pattern is a more directed pattern, but it does create turbulence around the penductor as well because it is sucking in extra water from the sides. All in all, they allowed me to have enough flow for pretty much any coral with a small closed loop system. I do not have one on my return, but I may on the next build.
