Ok, so since I'm dealing with this really annoying black bug issue, I figured I'd go ahead and tackle my flow issues too and try to knock this out too.
Here's the skinny:
Setup:
-Gyre XF130 on left side glass (Red Sea Reefer 170), mounted horizontally, pulsing towards the right side @ 30/20 percent for 1 hour and then 40/25 percent for 1 hour (alternating) throughout the day. It drops to 20% at night for a steady flow until morning.
Issues:
-Still seems to be beating the hell out of my frags (rack hangs from the side of the glass via a hook over the side. This can be resolved by me just axing the rack and putting frags on the rocks....so not too bit a deal I guess
-Flow is still limited. I've rearranged my rock about 10 times now and I still can't get the flow the way I want it. I think you're always going to have a couple of dead spots (in a cube anyway) but it seems that I beat up the coral across the top and on the right side and get almost no movement on the left.
-Apex control is still finicky. No matter what I do, I can't get the script for controlling the gyre/icecap within the Apex to read properly. It displays 76/82 percent consistantly when it's supposed to be set at 40/25 and 30/20. I've asked Coralvue and they say the setup seems ok, so talk to Neptune. So I've been trying different ideas from folks on their forum, but it's still not right.
Soooo, as much as I like the gyre, I'm debating going back to RW4's for now (since I already have them) and if I can get them the way I want, I might switch over to the WAV's. I still think the WAV's are too big for my tank, but my it does have a black back and I can put one on each side of the overflow box and angle them in towards the middle (that's how I'm going to set up the RW's). They won't be too much of an eye sore that way.
It's either that, or add another gyre and icecap control interface and put one on each side of the overflow box (like I would with the RW's or WAV's) and mount them vertically. That should allow for good flow around the whole outside of the tank and cause some nice turbulence in the middle.
From a financial point of view, the RW's and then maybe WAV's make more sense. You figure $40 for the Jebao/Apex interface (already have the RW4's), or $500 for the WAV set VS. another $320 for a second gyre and icecap. Plus if I move away from the gyre, I can sell off the gear to help offset the new pumps (Gyre130, icecap, battery backup).
So what's everyone think? I'm open to suggestions.
