Hello! I'm about to start my cycle in a 40G breeder and I'm wanting to go mainly SPS dom so I wanted some feedback on how much flow I have. Currently, there is an MP-10 (1300 GPH max), A Hydor Evolution (600 GPH), and the return a Quiet One Pro 2200 (550 GPH after head pressure) This gets me to around 2450 GPH Max (60X tank volume) and a midpoint of 1700 GPH.

Is this enough?

My plan for the Hydor evolution is to sweep the backside, let the MP-10 run on reef crest and then let the return agitate the surface and push waist to the overflow.

But I've been considering getting a Gyre XF330 (2350 GPH) and controller for it so that I can have a max of around 4800 GHP (120X Tank volume) and a Mid-level of flow at 2825 This would also give me a diverse range of flow types but I'm wondering if I'm overthinking it so I thought id ask!

Heres a concept image of where things would be.

Cheers!

I think either way you go it will be plenty of flow. The Gyre by itself will be more then enough. The two power heads will likely be fine as well. Dont get hung up on numbers too much, when you get your tank setup take a look and determine for yourself.

Thanks for the advice! I'm just wanting to make sure I start this thing off right, I try hard not to get too caught up on numbers and you're right it's certainly something that can be added as thing mature!

I have a 40b also and am using the icecap 1k gyre. When you say, "take a look and determine yourself" what exactly am I looking for? I have always questioned myself: is this too much, not enough, am I blasting certain coral, etc? What method are you using to know what position and GPh is most efficient and effective for your coral?
