Alright, so it looks like I am definitely upgrading my tank and potentially picking it up on Friday!! FYI there will be a Red Sea 300xl coming up for sale in the classifieds. Any way my return will probably be the Vortech M2 which I am running currently. I will either upgrade that once I include a few reactors or add a second pump. What I am more interested in hearing is what people are doing for their powerheads? I'm starting from scratch here as my Nero 3's won't cut it. I have owned MP 40's in the past and liked them but I am also considering a Maxspect Gyro or a combination of the two. What are you guys running on your 625xl's/180 gallon tanks? If I could get away with two MP40's on the back of the tank then great but I don't think that is going to be enough. I am not a huge fan of them going dead center on the sides of the tank which is why I'm considering the Maxspect. That at least can be positioned at the top. As always your input is very welcome. Obviously I want to keep the pumps out of the main display as much as possible!! Thanks!

Not sure why everyone loves the MP pumps so much. Jebao are way cheaper and you can change the direction. You could still have them on the back and angle them any way you want. Other than that some gyre might be the best bet.

I hear yea and will definitely take them into consideration. They are a lot cheaper. Reef octopus also has them and appear to be more directional then the vortechs. When I owned the Vortech's they were the only name in town. They aren't as cheap as the Jebao's though. Can any one else speak to the quality of the Jeboa's or reef octopus's? I'm not married to Vortech by any means.

I've had the same jebao pumps for 4 years now. Never an issue besides normal cleaning.

Any one out there with the Octo's from Reef Octopus? I am leaning towards using these and then changing out my return to a Reef Octo Varios-8s. Call me ridiculous but I would like the controllers to all be the same. I would use two Octo pulse 4's. How many pumps can you hook up to the apex with the adapter cables? Will I need the Wave engine if I want to be able to control all 3 pumps from my apex?

I use maxspect xf350 running 100% max. One on each side of the tank of my 625xxl.

Im a Tunze guy all the way. However I put 2 ow-25 jebao's in my 120 2.5 years ago at startup. They are in my frag system now and were replaced with ow-40's.
I really wanted to see how long they last.
Well im very happy with them to say the least.
The controller has more options than the Tunze.
You can get 4 0w-40's for the price of 1 Tunze 6105.
Just remember to clean them, lol.
I stripped these that came out of my 120 and put them in my frag system a year ago. They now look the same. Time for another stripping.

Mine are pretty quiet. I set it to 20% run at night and then 100% max during the day. The XF350 is the quieter version of the gyre pumps. I have 4 total. 2 on standby that I use to swap out every 3-4 months while I clean the old unit. I just do a vineger bath and scrub it... then store it in the garage to swap out the ones in the tank. It does take time to clean them though. No way around that.

Ok fair enough. Out of curiosity seems like everyone mounts them on the sides. Would flow really be awful if you had them in the back. Say one on each side of the overflow. I guess the aquascape would really interfere with the flow in back of tank? I really hate mounting pumps of the sides of tanks. With the RO's I am thinking I can probably put them in back corners and have them pointed towards upper middle of tank? I just wonder if two will give me enough flow? I could repurpose the Nero 3's on middle to lower end on the back of the tank behind the aquascape..

What I've noticed is that SPS grows towards the flow so if flow is coming from one side only(back glass), it tends to grow in that direction. If flow comes from both side/ends, then the sps grows out more rounder and natural looking.

Good to know!
