Hello,

I am wondering if anyone puts a small powerhead in their sump to help facilitate flow through it? I am currently dosing NOPox and I have fallen victim to the white slime which I assume is a bacterial bloom. It is is only in my sump and not noticeable in my display. So I was wondering if I added 1 or 2 small powerheads in there, would it help get rid of it. Or is their any other ideas? My Nutrients are not at 0 or close to it. My Nitrates tested 2 days ago at 22ppm, and phos at 0.2ppm on Hanna. checkers. I have a 120 gal Cube with a 45 Gal Proclear 400 Sump. I am at work right now until 11:00 PM ET. So I am unable to post pictures if requested.

i currently run flow in all 3 chambers in my sump honestly my fuge which is in the middle i run a 500gph controllable wavemaker
my return pump chamber i have a small 250gph just aimed at the bottom so nothing sits in there
and in my sock chamber i have my skimmer with the flow turned up to push water around so nothing really sits my sump is spotless lol

I use a small powerhead in all of my sump areas to keep detritus from building up. It works great and makes maintenance much easier.

Just a passing thought but I was thinking of getting one of these cheap UV things for just keeping the sump free of similar issues
TBH not a hearty endorsement but more of a $20 solution perhaps…check out reviews

Interesting concept. My worry is the uv degrading other plastics or wires in the sump that may not be uv resistant.

I was thinking of getting these, hoping they would suffice in the sump
honestly i used the same ones before i got the controller ones only reason i got them was they came in a kit i bought off somone had no other place to use them in so sump they went dont need anything crazy aslong as the water moves honestly

This. I used one for UV for a bit, had a cover on the top half so I wasn't zapping my eyes when in the sump. Long term if your sump is acrylic, it can possibly cause some issues (apparently discoloring and glue issues iirc). They are chintzy, so don't depend on them to work long term.

If you want a decent but not wallet breaking model to deal with the slime, look at AA's green killing machine.

currently no, but have before and it definitely helps with keeping things moving. I tend to use live rock for extra bio filtering so i get a lot of detritus underneath them

I am assuming that If I reduce the NOPOX dosing by a 3rd, and get the white slime moving around in the sump with more flow, perform a 30 or so gallon water change on it and sucking up most of the slime that I can, I am hoping to solve the issue.

I don't have enough rock to put in my sump. I put a Brightwell Aquatics Xport BIO Brick in there last month and pre-treated it for 24 hours with MicoBacter 7.

ive been thinking about switching over to something like that or similar. whats your experience on it?

Well, I am not sure, I was trying to be proactive in battling the Nitrates with it. I have only had it a month, so I can't really say if it doing anything. I am sure it is because it is so porous, it kind of has to be beneficial for beneficial bacteria to grow on/in.

yeah thats what got me interested in the design, it looks like even deep in the block theres a lot of holes and groves and etc, which I feel live rock usually cant offer. i guess only time will tell then lol
