What do you guys think contributes to heavy PE on sps?

I was checking a local’s sps tank out today and noticed even though he had 2x gyres his tank didn’t seem like it had a lot of flow. He was growing zoas and lps at the bottom and they were barely moving. I also noticed, his sps polyps extension is crazy. I’m talking thick nice shaggy PE.

I have a ton of flow when comparing with his tank, but my pe is less. I get some PE, but they’re rather thin. Most of the zoas I have growing at the bottom have long wavy PE, so I know I’ve got some decent amount of flow going. Honestly, thinking back, I’ve never been able to get my sps to crazy thick PE like that. So, that’s got me curious as to rather it’s flow related, nutrients, possibly even lighting?

What do you guys think?

I know how you feel. I'll get a frag with good PE and then have it go completely dead a few days later. No idea what's going on.

While I read everyone saying that PE doesn't equal health, SOMETHING is triggering the polyps to hide.

I don't feed my fish more than once a day or once every other day, but do make sure I keep my nitrates up and dose acropower. My phosphates are zero on my Hanna meter, which I'll sometimes dose.

Could it be not enough fish poop? How about low pH? My pH is also low at 7.7 on my salifert.

I've got an mp10 running at 100% reef crest mode in my tiny 17g tank.

My montiporas all have decent PE and a tiny WD acro frag still has a bit of PE, but the rest have zero.

I've tried spot feeding the corals filter food, no luck.
