Flow & oil film issue on 60g cube

Hey guys,

My tank size is 24inch x 24inch x 24inch.
I'm running sump tank, a fan for cooling down and a wave maker.

I would like to ask, will a gyre type of wavemaker is gonna be overkill for a cube tank?

Another things is i had this tank running for more than 5 years. But only within a year times, the tank water surface started to develop this oil film.
I do not want to invest a surface skimmer. The only way i could eliminate the oil film is to turn down my flow rate, where the water level will be same as the overflow area. But i do not want to turn down my flow rat, i would want it to run on max.

In such case, what other resolution i could use to solve this issue?

If you don’t have an overflow which should alleviate this along with water current, add a hang on back power filter which should break it up
Even the smallest gyre may be too much for this size tank
 
Depending on the type of sand you are using, a 1-2k gyre pump will work out for you if you keep the % at below 40. When I first started my wife 60 cube I added a 3k gyre until I was able to get my MP10's. Yes it did kick the sand around a bit, but it wasn't too crazy. Sand in tank is Caribsea black sand which is pretty coarse. If you are using fine sand in the tank, then do not use a gyre as it will look like a sand storm was unleased.

I don't have an overflow box, my tank is those traditional left n right overflow to sump kind.
I just wonder why all this while doesn't have this oil film until recent years.

My sand is fine sand, then i don't think is appropriate to use gyre anymore.
 
Film on the water surface tells me that you are lacking in surface agitation. The simplest solution is to angle a power head up to create turbulent flow at the surface. Good skimming will go a long way towards preventing it as well.
