Flow overkill? Need advice before black friday! :)

No - no nippers. All parameters were excellent. They would do ok for a while, then one day start shrinking back, and wouldn't come back. I had an elegance that was doing well . . . and I just lost it last week. Was doing great - all parameters were in line, and everything else is flourishing. zoas, duncan, acan, leather, cat eye, monte . . . just the elegance, stopped coming out and is now gone. I tried to move it around, change flow, but it wouldn't come back.
Depending upon their origin, some elegance do good or bad. I think its the australian elegance that is pretty tough and survive well in reef tanks. The other ones (i dont know eactly but probably indonasia ) is very finicky

How much maintenance do they require?
I clean all three every quarter if the need is or not. Usually takes about 7 minutes to take them apart and put them together. Just be gentle with the impellers. Tool needed, toothbrush and butter knife to move the magnet things so the impeller cages come off. Here is a video, the guys is better looking than I and does a pretty good job. I do not soak mine but if you need to I would suggest a 50/50 vinegar solution for about an hour completely disassembled

I had an Australian one. I’ve had it for about 6 months. We did move, but it was fine the first 2 months after that. That’s what is weird.

This is my biggest issue with the MPs but it is a rather isolated issue. The snails in my tank proliferate like rabbits (or perhaps, like snails). This isnt an issue until they're 1-2mm in diameter but once they reach that size, they are still small enough to climb inside the pump. The pumps start making noise and flow is affected. I have to strip down one of the pumps every couple days to clean the little rotten critters out. If you don't have a bajillion snails hatching all the time (not sure why I was cursed with this), it wont be an issue. Thankfully the pumps are easy to maintain.

For future Euphyllia corals, if you add branching ones you can always frag a dying head off of the colony. With wall corals the whole colony is always at risk. FWIW.

I see you posted a link to the gyre without a controller. Juat make sure you get one with a controller. The maxpect gyres dont work without one. The pump only option is for those that have one with a controller and want to add a second. I have a XF230 in my 100 And it moves a ton of water. Pushes my sand around and i have it on %80 pulse

BTW, the IceCap 3K Gyre is licensed Maxspect technology. Comes with a controller and is much less expensive.

Can you explain the difference between both Controllers besides the ability to control 2 pumps on the advanced?

I have not used both. I only add that point as I am currently researching the IceCap Gyre for a new build. Perhaps someone else knows the comparison?

The ice cap 3k has been wonderful for us. I'm actually buying another on friday. It's dead silent from 10-70%. Above that there's very little noise. The only time it starts to get noticble is when I have to clean which I do every 3 weeks to a month. It's very easy to do as well. No complaints at all and the width and flow pattern is amazing.

How is the Controller of the 3K? In what pattern do you have it?

The controller has been flawless. I run it in pulse mode at 80% during the day then random flow at night with the flow rate going from 10-70%. I will say the motor was bad on the unit I bought and coralvue shipped an immediate replacement without a return label. Havent had a problem since. Coralvue was excellent to deal with too. Customer service means a lot to me when using a product as well.

I have a standard 125 with a Gyre 280, MP60, MP40, Tunze 6095 and Tunze wave box. Flow is adequate, but I have large predators and SPS and a lot of rock.

I have two gyre's on the ends and mp40 in the middle of my 72 48 x 18 x 21 I purchase the new controller on a black friday deal. They Gyre's have worked great for me for over a year and half with plenty of movement.

As you can see the water is pushed toward the middle and the mp 40 sucks the collision down and push the water around the lower part of the tank
Keep a close eye on that overflow box!

Hello -

I am building my new 180 and watching BRS for black Friday sales.
Here is my VERY slow build thread - but it is coming along now!
https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/new-180-build-mini-coops-dream-tank.327141/

What I am wondering: I am looking at getting the MP40's for the sides, but am afraid of dead spots with the tank being 6 ft long. I have a lot of dead spots in my 120 and powerheads that shouldn't have a problem with that, but they do. (some of this is due to my aquascape as well. The new tank with have more open islands). So, I was looking to get the XF230 Gyre pump to put in the back from @Bulk Reef Supply. It is rated at 2300 gph. I don't want anything with too much flow, and this one doesn't have a controller.
https://www.bulkreefsupply.com/xf230-gyre-pump-only-2300-gph-maxspect.html

I have a double overflow/double return, and am using the pan world 200ps as my return pump. So, that will create some flow as well.
Would adding the Gyre in the back be overkill, or a wise idea?

Thanks in advance for your help!

I just installed the XF250 with a controller on my 4 foot 120. This is a much better way to move water. The controller is great, easy to use with preset flow patterns. I think the days of the single stream powerheads (vortex) are over. Watch it on YouTube.

I run a gyre 130 and a gyre 250 on my 180 both connected to the advanced controller. It gives me all the flow I need with mixed patterns. I run them at 50% to 60% on one of there preset patterns.

Right, because water movement is more important than water flow. But many will never give up their Vortechs :)
