I have a 20H that I am setting up as a frag/grow out tank. I needed more flow than just the return. The return is a mag 5 that I have estimated with the head to probably be turning over about 300gph. Needed to add more flow in the tank so I retrofitted a mj1000 with an adapter that creates more indirect flow and not a focused stream. It is putting out 283gph. So now I have about 583gph turnover in the 20h. I could just not be used to seeing the much flow... but it seems like too much. Thoughts??

Don't have the budget to get a fancy vortech with the variable flow and all that at the moment. But I could get the mj 600 which would put me at 460gph.

I am planning to get my first inhabitants soon, a neon goby pair and I honestly don't think they could swim in there!

Very funny visual. I'm sure the fish would not find it very amusing. ;)

I can see from your signature that I am not even approaching your turnover. What about smaller tanks though. Is it a straight line flow/gallon ratio or do you need to be more careful in a smaller tank. I will be keeping mostly polps and lps. Probably some sps down the road.

I had a 40B frag tank (36"x18"x16") and was pushing almost 5000gph in it. I had mostly LPS and zoas in it as well.

On the flip side, though, I currently have a 160G frag tank (96"x36"x12") that I'm only driving around 2000gph through. Any more and I start blowing frags around.

So size does come into the equation. But I don't think 600ish gph is anywhere close to too much for a 20g.

i like your style ronnie, i had 4000+ in my breeder before i got my MP40!

in my 20l I have a koralia 750 along with return...ts a solid amoun of flow

I actually have to agree with that. My method is, unless my corals have blown over, it's fine.

Thanks so much for all the replies!! Sounds like my flow might be a little weak sauce compared to what you guys are running!!

I am getting used to seeing this much water movement in my tank.

I'll know I need to bring it back a little bit if I hear the gobies screaming.
